Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula
Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula is a large peninsula (about 3,200 square miles) on the North Carolina coast, lying between the Albemarle Sound to the north and the Pamlico Sound to the south. The 5 counties of Dare, Hyde, Beaufort, Tyrrell, and Washington all lie wholly or partly on the peninsula. Much of the peninsula is covered with marshland. The pocosin marshlands of the Albemarle-Pamlico peninsula drain into the Alligator River, an important link in the intracoastal waterway. Forty four percent of the peninsula is owned by timber companies, and another twenty one percent of the peninsula is owned by agricultural corporations. This led to a great deal of deforestation on the peninsula in the 1980s, to the extent that only one third of the peninsula's pocosin marshlands continue to exist in their unaltered form. Belhaven is a waterfront town in Beaufort County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,688 at the 2010 Census. Belhaven is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. History The Belhaven City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Healthcare The community formerly had a hospital, Pungo District Hospital, which opened in 1949. Pantego Creek LLC, the operator, asked for a third party to acquire the hospital as the operator could not pay for the care of the large number of Medicaid and Medicare patients using the hospital. In 2011 Vidant Health acquired the hospital; in 2013 Vidant stated that it was unable to keep the hospital in operation due to poor finances and announced that it was going to close the hospital. Pantego Creek Board closed it in 2014, and it was demolished in 2016. Vidant opened a non-emergency clinic in the area. Manns Harbor is a census-designated place (CDP) in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 821. Overview Before the first settlers arrived in the vicinity of Manns Harbor, the Native American village Dasamongueponke existed on or close to the site. Located east of the intersection of U.S. Routes 64 and 264, it is nestled along the western bank of Croatan Sound. Before 1957, Manns Harbor used to harbor a ferry that traversed the sound and provided access to Roanoke Island. Today, the William B.
