Albatross Island (South Georgia)
Albatross Island () is an island southeast of Cape Buller, lying in the Bay of Isles, South Georgia. Charted in 1912–13 by Robert Cushman Murphy, American naturalist aboard the brig ''Daisy'', who gave this name because he observed albatrosses there. The eastern headland of the island is called The Pricker, a name which first appeared on a 1931 British Admiralty chart. The island is rat-free and there is a breeding population of South Georgia pipits here, along with wandering albatrosses and giant petrel Giant petrels form a genus, ''Macronectes'', from the family Procellariidae, which consists of two species. The Albatross Island, part of the Hunter Island Group, is an island and nature reserve located in Bass Strait, that lies between north-west Tasmania and King Island, Australia. The Peerapper name for the island is ''Tangatema''. The island is part of the Albatross Island and Black Pyramid Rock Important Bird Area that is notable for its breeding colony of 5,000 pairs of shy albatross, some 40% of the world population of the species. Fauna Apart from shy albatross, breeding seabirds and shorebirds include little penguin, short-tailed shearwater, fairy prion, Pacific gull, silver gull and sooty oystercatcher. A pair of white-bellied sea eagles usually nests there annually. The island is visited regularly by Australian fur seals and New Zealand fur seals. Thistle Island
Thistle Island / Noondala is in the Spencer Gulf, South Australia, some west of Adelaide, and northwest of the Gambier Islands. The city of Port Lincoln lies to the northwest of the island. Between them, the Gambier Islands and Thistle form a chain across the mouth of the gulf between the southern tips of the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas, sometimes referred to as the Taylor Islands group. The island is approximately 17 kilometres (10.5 mi) long and varies in width from 1 kilometre wide (0.6 mi) at its narrowest central part to 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) wide in the south-east part.
