Albanian Comics
Albanian comics, though not well known internationally, were produced mainly by comic-authors from Kosovo. Until recently there was no comic tradition in Albania where comics were seen as junk literature known as ''fumeti'' (literally, little clouds of smoke) supposedly because pop art was prohibited by the dictatorial communist regime. Today there is one comic magazine published in Kosovo called ''Leon'', and there is ''Tafë Kusuri'' comic-strip (oldest serial character founded by Agim Qena, and continued by his son Rron Qena) together with ''Garfield'' and ''Calvin and Hobbes'' (translated in Albanian) published by ''Koha Ditore'' newspaper. Brief history In Kosovo comic culture was influenced most notably by the subculture in Yugoslavia, although other countries had influence. Kosovo
Kosovo ( sq, Kosova or ; sr-Cyrl, Косово ), officially the Republic of Kosovo ( sq, Republika e Kosovës, links=no; sr, Република Косово, Republika Kosovo, links=no), is a partially recognised state in Southeast Europe. It lies at the centre of the Balkans. Albanian Art
Albanian art ( ) refers to all artistic expressions and artworks in Albania or produced by Albanians. The country's art is either work of arts produced by its people and influenced by its culture and traditions. It has preserved its original elements and traditions despite its long and eventful history around the time when Albania was populated to Illyrians and Ancient Greeks and subsequently conquered by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans. At different times, Illyrian, Ancient Greek and Roman art developed in Albania and survived in a number of media inclusive of architecture, sculpture, pottery, and mosaic. Kosovo War
The Kosovo War was an armed conflict in Kosovo that started 28 February 1998 and lasted until 11 June 1999. It was fought by the forces of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (i.e. Serbia and Montenegro), which controlled Kosovo before the war, and the Kosovo Albanians, Kosovo Albanian rebel group known as the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). The conflict ended when the NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, intervened by beginning air strikes in March 1999 which resulted in Yugoslav forces withdrawing from Kosovo. The KLA was formed in the early 1990s to fight against Serbian persecution of Kosovo Albanians, with the goal of uniting Kosovo into a Greater Albania. The Albanian National Awakening ( sq, Rilindja or ), commonly known as the Albanian Renaissance or Albanian Revival, is a period throughout the 19th and 20th century of a cultural, political and social movement in the Albanian history where the Albanian people gathered strength to establish an independent cultural and political life as well as the country of Albania. Prior to the rise of nationalism, Albania remained under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for almost five centuries and the Ottoman authorities suppressed any expression of national unity or national conscience by the Albanian people. Gani Jakupi
Gani Jakupi, born in 1956 in Kosovo, is a Kosovo-Albanian graphic novel author, journalist, and jazz composer. Biography Gani Jakupi, born in Kosovo in 1956, published his first comic at the age of 13, in a regional Albanian-language magazine. At 17, he published in newspapers and magazines in most of the republics that made up Yugoslavia. At the end of the 1970s, he arrived in Paris, placed his drawings in humorous magazines and some comics in fanzines. He settled in Paris. The three volume series Matador, with the story by Jakupi and drawings by Hugues Labiano, appeared between 1991 and 1994 by Glénat. Once the series ended, Jakupi moved to Barcelona, Spain, and gradually left comics. He works in illustration, design, translation (among others, works by Danilo Kiš or Quim Monzó) or journalism.
