Alathur taluk is a taluk in Perambalur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was created by former chief minister J.Jayalalithaa for issues of population increase. Kunnam taluk was bifurcated to form this new taluk. A tehsil (, also known as tahsil, taluka, or taluk) is a local unit of administrative division in some countries of South Asia. It is a subdistrict of the area within a district including the designated populated place that serves as its administrative centre, with possible additional towns, and usually a number of villages. The terms in India have replaced earlier terms, such as '' pargana'' (''pergunnah'') and ''thana''. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, a newer unit called mandal (circle) has come to replace the system of tehsils. Perambalur District
Perambalur is one of the 38 districts (an administrative district) in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The district headquarters is located at Perambalur. The district occupies an area of 1,752 km² and had a population of 565,223 with a sex-ratio of 1,003 females for every 1,000 males in 2011. Perambalur district is a centrally located inland district of Tamil Nadu. It was trifurcated from the erstwhile composite Tiruchirappalli district and was formed on 1 January 1995.
