Alan Woods (footballer)
Alan Edward Woods (15 February 1937 – 28 September 2021) was an English Association football, footballer who played as a wing half. Woods was Cap (sport), capped by the England national under-18 football team, England national youth team in 1955 while a Tottenham Hotspur F.C., Tottenham Hotspur player. He died in September 2021. His son Neil Woods and grandson Michael Woods (footballer), Michael Woods are also active in football. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders. As central midfielders often go across boundaries, with mobility and passing ability, they are often referred to as deep-lying midfielders, play-makers, box-to-box midfielders, or holding midfielders. Michael James Woods (born 6 April 1990) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for South Shields. He started his career at Chelsea, and has since played for Harrogate Town, Hartlepool United, Dover Athletic and York City. Club career Chelsea Born in York, North Yorkshire, Woods turned down a scholarship from Leeds United to sign for Chelsea. Leeds United chairman Ken Bates accused Chelsea of tapping-up the sixteen-year-old as well as two other academy players. Eventually the two clubs later agreed an out-of-court settlement, with Chelsea paying £5 million in compensation for Woods and Tom Taiwo. After spending time in the reserves, Woods made his first-team debut for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge against Macclesfield Town in the third round of the FA Cup on 6 January 2007, making him the fourth-youngest player to ever play for Chelsea at 16 years and 275 days old. Neil Stephen Woods (born 30 July 1966) is an English football manager and former professional footballer who is academy manager at Grimsby Town. As a player, he was a striker from 1983 to 2000 for Doncaster Rovers, Rangers, Ipswich Town, Bradford City, Grimsby Town, Wigan Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Mansfield Town, York City, Southport and Gainsborough Trinity. After retiring from playing he took up a role at Grimsby Town as youth team manager in 2003 before later managing the club from 2009 to 2011. Following his dismissal he was appointed academy manager at Walsall before returning to a similar position at Grimsby in October 2016.
