Alan Wilkins (playwright)
Alan Wilkins (1969 – 7 September 2022) was a Scottish playwright. His first professionally produced play was ''Ball or Scoop'', which opened at the Benaki Museum in April 2004 and then toured the Highlands and islands of Scotland. The play was set in a Highland bothy and featured five hill walkers sheltering from a storm. He received the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland Best New Play Award in 2008 for ''Carthage Must Be Destroyed'', and has since had two other plays produced. Life and career Wilkins was born in 1969, and brought up in Edinburgh. Before his professional debut as a playwright, he worked as an actor and taught English as a Foreign Language in Poland and Spain. Whilst in Spain, he wrote his first play, ''Childish Things''. He sent it to the Traverse and it received a public reading. Encouraged, he wrote his second play, ''Cafeteria/Restaurant'', which received a reading at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. Critics' Awards For Theatre In Scotland
The Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) are an annual event awarding performances "substantially produced in Scotland, or developed, rehearsed and premiered in Scotland". Awards ceremony The ceremony is itinerant in terms of location, switching between theatre venues across Scotland – for example, in 2007 the ceremony was hosted by Pitlochry Festival Theatre, while in 2019 the event was held at Tramway (arts centre) in Glasgow. Other venues have included Perth Theatre and Edinburgh Festival Theatre. The Awards Ceremony, which normally takes place on the second Sunday in June, is open to the general public, not just members of Scotland's theatre industry. Awards covering the 2019-20 theatre season, which was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland, were belatedly announced in November 2020. Scottish Arts Council
The Scottish Arts Council ( gd, Comhairle Ealain na h-Alba, sco, Scots Airts Cooncil) was a Scottish public body responsible for the funding, development and promotion of the arts in Scotland. The Council primarily distributed funding from the Scottish Government as well as National Lottery funds received via the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Scottish Arts Council was formed in 1994 following a restructuring of the Arts Council of Great Britain, but had existed as an autonomous body since a royal charter of 1967. In 2010 it merged with Scottish Screen to form Creative Scotland. Activities The Council funded all the major areas of the arts, seeking to maintain balance between the many diverse communities of Scotland. Citizens Theatre
The Citizens Theatre, in what was the Royal Princess's Theatre, is the creation of James Bridie and is based in Glasgow, Scotland as a principal producing theatre. Traverse Theatre
The Traverse Theatre is a theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was founded in 1963 by John Calder, John Malcolm, Jim Haynes and Richard Demarco. Interplay Europe
Interplay Europe is one of the most important festivals for young playwrights in Europe. It is organized by Interplay; an international, not-for-profit arts organisation for the furtherance of young playwrights aged 18 to 26. It was founded in Sydney in 1985. Every two years Interplay organises the largest and most prestigious festival of its kind, World Interplay, in Australia. Every other year a European country hosts Interplay Europe. Benaki Museum
The Benaki Museum, established and endowed in 1930 by Antonis Benakis in memory of his father Emmanuel Benakis, is housed in the Benakis family mansion in downtown Athens, Greece. The museum houses Greek works of art from the prehistorical to the modern times, an extensive collection of Asian art, hosts periodic exhibitions and maintains a state-of-the-art restoration and conservation workshop.
