Alan Thompson (canoeist)
Alan Blair Thompson (born 14 June 1959) is a sprint canoeist who competed in the early to mid-1980s. He competed at three Olympic Games (1980–1988) and won two Olympic gold medals for New Zealand. Thompson was born in 1959 in Gisborne, New Zealand. He attended Te Hapara Primary School, Gisborne Intermediate and Gisborne Boys' High School. and played rugby union for his high school. He was also selected for the under-18 North Island rugby team. Thompson attended his first Summer Olympics in 1980 in Moscow and was part of the small New Zealand team of just four athletes that attended that year, as most western athletes stayed away due to the boycott that year. In the K-2 500 metres, Thompson and Geoff Walker were eliminated in the semi-final. In the K-4 1000 metres, Thompson's team did not start. Allan Edward "Ed" Thompson (December 25, 1944 – October 22, 2011) was an American businessman and politician. He served as Mayor of Tomah, Wisconsin for two non-consecutive terms, and was the Libertarian Party (United States), Libertarian candidate for Governor of Wisconsin in 2002, receiving nearly 11% of the vote in that race. Early life, education, and business career Thompson was born in Elroy, Wisconsin. His mother, Julie (née Dutton), was a teacher, and his father, Allan Thompson, owned and ran a gas station and country grocery store. A graduate of Royall High School in 1963, he was active in the drama department and competed in football, basketball, and track. After high school, Ed briefly attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Alan Thompson (born October 5, 1949) is a former American football running back in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Ottawa Rough Riders. He also was a member of the Philadelphia Bell in the World Football League (WFL). He played college football at the University of Wisconsin. Early years Thompson attended James Madison High School, where he was a starter at running back. He accepted a football scholarship from the University of Wisconsin. As a sophomore, he was named the starter at fullback. He had 220 rushing yards in his college debut against the University of Oklahoma. He led the team during the season, collecting 214 carries for 907 yards (fourth in the conference), a 4.2-yard average and 9 touchdowns.
