Alan Stewart (educator)
Sir Alan Stewart (8 December 1917 – 1 September 2004) was a New Zealand educator and university administrator. He was principal of Massey Agricultural College from 1959 to 1963 and founding vice-chancellor of Massey University from 1964 to 1983, during which time he guided the institution's transition from agricultural college to full university. He is noted for building the university's internationally recognised agricultural programme, as well as for greatly expanding the university's extramural programme to make tertiary education available to rural New Zealanders. Alan Carl Stewart
Alan Carl Stewart (September 27, 1893 – July 26, 1958) was a Canadian provincial and federal politician. Born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, the son of Robert Whiteside Stewart and Savilla Mary Maud, he was educated in Moosomin and at the University of Manitoba. Stewart was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in 1929. He won as an independent for the constituency of Yorkton, but was given a position as Minister of Highways within the coalition government led by Tory premier James Thomas Milton Anderson. He served as Minister of Highways until the fall of the government in 1934. In the 1934 election he ran as a Conservative, but lost to the Liberal candidate, Vincent Reynolds Smith. He was re-elected in 1938 under the Unity party, serving until 1944. Stewart was elected as a Liberal to the House of Commons representing the federal riding of Yorkton, serving as a member of the Liberal government led by Louis St. Laurent from 1949 to 1953. Alan Gibson Stewart (born 28 March 1938) is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Manly in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1978 to 1984. Born in Manly, Stewart attended public schools at Harbord and Manly, and then St Aloysius College. He studied at Sydney Technical College, Wagga Agricultural College and Macquarie University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science. At Griffith University he was awarded a PhD in Environmental Science. He served as President of the Harbord branch the Australian Labor Party and a delegate to the Manly State Electoral Council. Stewart is the author of two books: ''Hard Row to Hoe'' and ''Persian Expedition''. In 1978, Stewart won the traditionally Liberal seat of Manly after sitting member Douglas Darby's retirement. Alan Plantagenet Stewart, 10th Earl of Galloway, KT, DL, JP (21 October 1835 – 7 February 1901), styled Lord Garlies until 1873, was a British peer and politician. Background Galloway was the eldest son of Randolph Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway, and Lady Harriett Blanche, daughter of Henry Somerset, 6th Duke of Beaufort. He was educated at Harrow School. Cricket He played first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club between 1858 and 1864. Public life Galloway sat as Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire between 1868 and 1873. Alan fitz Walter (1140 – 1204) was hereditary High Steward of Scotland and a crusader. Life Alan was the son and heir of Walter fitz Alan, by his spouse Eschina, who was possibly a member of a family from the south of Scotland. From 1178, the time of his succession to his father, until his death in 1204, Alan served as Steward of Scotland (''dapifer'') to William the Lion, King of Scots. It was during Alan's lifetime that his family acquired the Isle of Bute. He was possibly responsible for the erection of Rothesay Castle on the island. Alan allegedly accompanied Richard the Lionheart on the Third Crusade, from which he returned to Scotland in July 1191. Sir Alan Stewart of Darnley, 2nd Lord of Concressault (after 1406 – 1439) was a Scottish nobleman of the Stewart of Darnley family, involved in the Hundred Years War. Life The son of John Stewart of Darnley and Elizabeth, daughter of Donnchadh, Earl of Lennox, Darnley accompanied his father and brothers to fight in France. Following his father's death at the Battle of the Herrings in 1429 during the Siege of Orléans, Darnley inherited his father's title of the Lordships of Aubigny and Concressault, but not the County of Évreux, nor the Lordship of Aubigny. He also inherited the title of Constable of the Scottish Army in France, and the chieftaincy of the Stewarts of Darnley. By 1437, he had resigned his French territories to his younger brother, Sir John Stewart and returned to Scotland. He became involved in a blood feud with the Boyd family of Dean Castle. Sir Alan Stewart of Dreghorn (died 19 July 1333) was a Scottish nobleman. Life The son of Sir John Stewart (d. 1298) and his wife Margaret de Bonkyll, Sir Alan was a Scottish knight who fought for Robert the Bruce during the First War of Scottish Independence. Sir Alan accompanied Edward Bruce to Ireland in 1315, during the latter's attempt at the throne of Ireland. He was captured by the English in 1316 but was quickly ransomed. For his services to the King, Sir Alan was granted the lands of Dreghorn in Ayrshire on 28 April 1315. Sir Alan Stewart was killed with his brothers, Sir James and Sir John Stewart, at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333. Alan "Al" Stewart (born 1959) is the National Director of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches in Australia. Education Stewart studied Commerce at the University of New South Wales. He worked in business for a time but later decided to go into Christian ministry. He trained at Moore Theological College. Alan Stewart (born 1960) is a Scottish cinematographer. Born in Comrie, Perth and Kinross, Stewart first served as a tea boy for the camera crew of various productions, before gaining work as a clapper loader and focus puller, and eventually a camera operator working under the likes of Ellen Kuras and Seamus McGarvey. Stewart relocated to England in the mid-1990s, and in 1998, alongside Peter Middleton, was nominated for a BAFTA television award for his work on the BBC limited series '' Holding On''.
