Alan Smith (born 3 September 1949) is a Welsh former professional footballer. A midfielder, he progressed through the youth team at Newport County and made his debut in 1966. He went on to make 100 English Football League appearances for Newport scoring 6 goals. In 1972, he joined Merthyr Tydfil. Newport ( cy, Casnewydd; ) is a city and Local government in Wales#Principal areas, county borough in Wales, situated on the River Usk close to its confluence with the Severn Estuary, northeast of Cardiff. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders. As central midfielders often go across boundaries, with mobility and passing ability, they are often referred to as deep-lying midfielders, play-makers, box-to-box midfielders, or holding midfielders.
