Alan Astbury
Alan Astbury (1934–2014) was a Canadian physicist, emeritus professor at the University of Victoria, and director of the Tri-Universities Meson Facility (TRIUMF) laboratory. Early life and education He was born in Crewe, England, to Jane and Harold Astbury. His mother worked in a bakery and his father was an engineer for the Co-op Dairy. He went to Nantwich and Acton Grammar School. Although he was a good cricketer and footballer - he played for Crewe Schoolboys along with Chelsea and England player Frank Blunstone - his parents discouraged a career in football. Academic career In 1953, he joined the University of Liverpool, gaining a first-class honours degree in 1956 followed by a PhD in 1959 under Alec Merrison and Hugh Muirhead. He won a Leverhulme Research Fellowship to work on Liverpool's 380 MeV, 1.83m (72 inch) synchrocyclotron, the world's second-largest at the time. John Dowell
John Derek Dowell FRS (born 6 January 1935) is a British physicist, emeritus professor at University of Birmingham. Born in Leicestershire, he was educated at Coalville Grammar School and the University of Birmingham (BSc, PhD). He worked as a Research fellow at Birmingham University (1958-1960) before moving to be a research associate at the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva (1960-1962}. He then returned to Birmingham as lecturer (1962-1970), senior lecturer (1970-1974) and reader (1974-1980). In 1980 he was appointed Professor of Elementary Particle Physics and finally retired as professor emeritus in 2002. A proton is a stable subatomic particle, symbol , H+, or 1H+ with a positive electric charge of +1 ''e'' elementary charge. Antiprotons are stable, but they are typically short-lived, since any collision with a proton will cause both particles to be annihilated in a burst of energy. Peter Ignaz Paul Kalmus (born 25 January 1933), is a British particle physicist, and emeritus professor of physics at Queen Mary, University of London. Early life Kalmus was born in Prague on 25 January 1933, and moved to Britain with his parents and younger brother George Kalmus in 1939. His sister Elsa was born in 1945. The family became British citizens in 1946. Education Kalmus went to school first in London and then in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. KAON (Karlsruhe ontology) is an ontology infrastructure developed by the University of Karlsruhe and the Research Center for Information Technologies in Karlsruhe. In particle physics, CP violation is a violation of CP-symmetry (or charge conjugation parity symmetry): the combination of C-symmetry (charge symmetry) and P-symmetry ( parity symmetry). Nimrod (synchrotron)
Nimrod (National Institute Machine Radiating on Downs, "the Mighty Hunter" Nimrod; name attributed to W. Galbraith) was a 7 GeV proton synchrotron operating in the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the United Kingdom between 1964 and 1978. Nimrod delivered its last particles at 17:00 hrs on 6 June 1978. Although roughly contemporary with the CERN PS its conservative design used the "weak focussing" principle instead of the much more cost-effective "strong-focussing" technique, which would have enabled a machine of the same cost to reach much higher energies.
