Alameda Works Shipyard
The Alameda Works Shipyard, in Alameda, California, United States, was one of the largest and best equipped shipyards in the country. The only building remaining from the yard is the Union Iron Works Powerhouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.1956. History Established in the early 1900s by United Engineering Works, the yard was purchased by Union Iron Works (Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation) in 1916 and came to be known as the Alameda Works. During the World War I period the yard built cargo ships, tankers and 2 small tugboats. USS Dreadnaught (YT-34)
USS ''Dreadnaught'' (ID-1951), later YT-534 and YNG-21, was a United States Navy tug that was in service from 1918 to 1944. Construction, acquisition and commissioning ''Dreadnaught'' was built as a commercial tug of the same name by Union Iron Works at San Francisco, California, in 1917 for the Rolph Navigation and Coal Company of San Francisco. On 17 May 1917, the U.S. Navy purchased her for use during World War I and assigned her the naval registry identification number 1951. After fitting out at Mare Island Navy Yard at Vallejo, California, she was commissioned as USS ''Dreadnaught'' (ID-1951) on 31 January 1918. The United States Shipping Board (USSB) was established as an emergency agency by the 1916 Shipping Act (39 Stat. 729), on September 7, 1916. The United States Shipping Board's task was to increase the number of US ships supporting the World War I efforts. United States Shipping Board program ended on March 2, 1934.
