Alajuela (canton)
Alajuela is a canton in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. Its head city is the provincial capital city of Alajuela. History Alajuela was created on 7 December 1848 by decree 167. Geography Alajuela has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. Northward from the city of Alajuela, the canton continues along the border with the province of Heredia to its east, encompassing a strip of the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range) between Poas Volcano and Barva Volcano. On the Caribbean side of the mountains, the canton takes in a portion of the Sarapiquí area. The Río Poás (Poas River) forms the major portion of the canton's western border, finally giving way to the Río Poasito as the territory ascends into the Cordillera Central. Southwest of the city of Alajuela, the canton of Alajuela ends at the confluence of the Río Grande (Great River) and the Río Virilla (Virilla River). Poás Volcano National Park
Poás Volcano National Park ( es, Parque Nacional Volcán Poás) is a national park in Costa Rica that covers an area of approximately ; the summit is . It was established on 25 January 1971. Depending on conditions, visitors can walk all the way to the edge of the main crater, but on 13 April 2017 the park was closed to visitors due to an explosive eruption on the evening of 12 April. Still further eruptions, including on Easter, 16 April, caused the park to be closed until August 2018. Over the years, the park has been frequently closed to visitors due to precautions because of water vapor and sulfuric acid gas emissions. The status of the park being subject to change, potential visitors should check the current conditions at the park. Poas Volcano erupted twice briefly in September 2019. Alajuela Cathedral
The Our Lady of the Pillar Cathedral ( es, Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Pilar ) also called Alajuela Cathedral or Cathedral of Virgin of the Pillar, is a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church, which is located in the city of Alajuela, the second largest in the Central American country of Costa Rica. It is a temple that follows the Roman or Latin rite and is the mother of the Diocese of Alajuela (''Dioecesis Alaiuelensis'') which was created in 1921 by bull "Praedecessorum Nostrorum" of Pope Benedict XV. The current building has its origins in a small chapel built in 1782 not far from its current location. A new structure designed by Gustavo Casallini began to be built in 1854 but was stopped shortly after due to war so the opening and consecration was delayed until 1863. Sarapiquí is the tenth canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. History The canton was established by law on November 18, 1970. The Sarapiquí River played a very important role in the defense of national sovereignty, because on 10 April 1856, the filibusters under the command of the American William Walker arrived in Costa Rica through the Sarapiquí River, where the battle of Sardinal was fought. Barva Volcano
Barva Volcano is an andesitic stratovolcano complex in central Costa Rica, 22 km north of San José, in Heredia Province. On the eastern side of the mountain it has a lake in what was the volcanic crater, called "Laguna de Barva", and in the western side it has three hills on the top which are called "Las Tres Marías". It is located in the small agricultural community of Sacramento. Barva has several eruptive centres at its summit and many parasitic cones on its flanks. Cordillera Central (Costa Rica)
The Cordillera Central is a volcanic mountain range in central Costa Rica which continues from the Continental Divide to east of Cordillera de Tilarán. It extends 80 km from Tapezco Pass to the Turrialba Volcano and ending on the Pacuare River. It is separated from Cordillera de Tilarán by Balsa River and Platanar and Zarcero hills. The Cordillera Central is part of the American Cordillera, a chain of mountain ranges (cordillera) that consists of an almost continuous sequence of mountain ranges that form the western "backbone" of North America, Central America, South America and Antarctica. Heredia () is a district in the Heredia canton of Heredia province, Costa Rica. Alajuela () is a district in the Alajuela canton of the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica. As the seat of the Municipality of Alajuela canton, it is awarded the status of city. By virtue of being the city of the first canton of the province, it is also the capital of the Province of Alajuela.
