Alaiedon Township, Michigan
Alaiedon Township ( ) is a civil township of Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the township population was 2,910. Communities *German was an area of the township originally settled by immigrants from Germany. *The city of Lansing is to the northwest of the township and also controls a noncontiguous tract of land within the township along Interstate 96 under a conditional land transfer agreement. Much of the northern portion is considered to be part of the Greater Lansing urban area. *The city of Mason is to the south and has annexed land that was formerly within the township. *The unincorporated community of Holt in Delhi Charter Township is to the west and the unincorporated community of Okemos in Meridian Charter Township is to the north. *Michigan State University owns land in the northwest corner of the township. Civil Township
A civil township is a widely used unit of local government in the United States that is subordinate to a county, most often in the northern and midwestern parts of the country. The term town is used in New England, New York, and Wisconsin to refer to the equivalent of the civil township in these states; Minnesota uses "town" officially but often uses it and "township" interchangeably. Ingham County
Ingham County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 284,900. The county seat is Mason. Lansing, the state capital of Michigan, is largely located within the county. (Lansing is the only state capital in the United States located in a county of which it is not also the seat of government.) The county is home to Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, and the Class A minor league baseball team Lansing Lugnuts. Lansing Charter Township
Lansing Charter Township is a charter township of Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,143 at the 2020 census. The township consists of six non-contiguous sections bordered mostly by the cities of East Lansing and Lansing. The CDP of Edgemont Park is located in the north end of the western section of the township. History The first white settler to purchase land in the township was Jacob F. Cooley in 1837. The township was organized in 1842 in the northwest corner of Ingham County and was named after the hometown of one of the township's original settlers. The township experienced its first loss of land in 1859 when the unincorporated settlement of Lansing officially incorporated as a city out of seven square miles near the center of the township. Delhi Charter Township
Delhi Charter Township ( ) is a charter township of Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 25,877 at the 2010 census, an increase from 22,569 in 2000 census. Delhi Township is located directly south of the city of Lansing and is the fifth-largest municipality in Lansing–East Lansing metropolitan area. Communities * Holt is an unincorporated community in the township that is also a census-designated place for statistical purposes. Holt is just south of Interstate 96 and is about 6 miles northwest of Mason. Henry Schoolcraft
Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (March 28, 1793 – December 10, 1864) was an American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist, noted for his early studies of Native American cultures, as well as for his 1832 expedition to the source of the Mississippi River. He is also noted for his major six-volume study of Native Americans commissioned by Congress and published in the 1850s. He served as United States Indian agent in Michigan for a period beginning in 1822. During this period, he named several newly organized counties, often creating neologisms that he claimed were derived from indigenous languages. There he married Jane Johnston, daughter of a prominent Scotch-Irish fur trader and an Ojibwe mother, who was the high-ranking daughter of Waubojeeg, a war chief. Johnston lived with her family in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Johnston was bilingual and educated, having grown up in a literate household. Michigan State University
Michigan State University (Michigan State, MSU) is a public university, public Land-grant university, land-grant research university in East Lansing, Michigan. It was founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, the first of its kind in the United States.
