The Alacrity 19 is a British trailerable sailboat that was designed by Peter Stevenson as a cruiser and first built in 1960.Henkel, Steve: ''The Sailor's Book of Small Cruising Sailboats'', page 19. International Marine/McGraw-Hill, 2010. The Alacrity 19 is a fibreglass development of the wooden Alacrity 18. The design was developed into the Vivacity 20 in 1963. Production The design was built by Hurley Marine and later Russell Marine in the United Kingdom, with more than 700 built, but it is now out of production. The boat was also imported into the United States by Wells Yachts. Design The Alacrity 19 is a recreational keelboat, initially built of wood and later of fibreglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a reverse transom, a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed dual fin keels. It displaces and carries of iron ballast. Peter Stevenson (naval Architect)
Peter Stevenson is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Derry county team in the 1960s and 1970s. Described as a "tower of strength", he won the Ulster Senior Football Championships on three occasions. He was awarded an All Star in 1975. Stevenson played club football with a number of clubs throughout his career including St Colm's GAC Drum and Ballerin Sarsfields. Playing career Inter-county career Stevenson won Ulster Senior Championships with Derry including back-to-back successes in 1975 and 1976 when he was captain. He won an All Star for his performances in the 1975 Championship. He was also captain of the 1977 side that lost to Armagh. The Marlow-Hunter 18 is an American sailing dinghy that was designed by Glenn Henderson as a day sailer and first built in 2011. The Marlow-Hunter 18 replaced the similar Hunter 170 in production. The design was originally marketed by the manufacturer in 2011 as the Hunter 18, but, emerging from bankruptcy, the company became Marlow-Hunter in 2012 and the design was re-designated as the Marlow-Hunter 18. __NOTOC__ Length overall (LOA, o/a, o.a. or oa) is the maximum length of a vessel's hull measured parallel to the waterline. This length is important while docking the ship. It is the most commonly used way of expressing the size of a ship, and is also used for calculating the cost of a marina berth (for example, £2.50 per metre LOA). Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is a handicapping system used for yacht racing in North America. It allows dissimilar classes of sailboats to be raced against each other. The aim is to cancel out the inherent advantages and disadvantages of each class of boats, so that results reflect crew skill rather than equipment superiority. PHRF is used mainly for larger sailboats (i.e., 7 meters and above). For dinghy racing, the Portsmouth yardstick handicapping system is more likely to be used. The handicap number assigned to a class of yachts is based on the yacht's speed relative to a theoretical yacht with a rating of 0. A yacht's handicap, or rating, is the number of seconds per mile traveled that the yacht in question should be behind the theoretical yacht. Head (watercraft)
The head (pl. heads) is a ship's toilet. The name derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the regular sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship. Design In sailing ships, the toilet was placed in the bow somewhat above the water line with vents or slots cut near the floor level allowing normal wave action to wash out the facility. Outboard Motor
An outboard motor is a propulsion system for boats, consisting of a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom. They are the most common motorised method of propelling small watercraft. As well as providing propulsion, outboards provide steering control, as they are designed to pivot over their mountings and thus control the direction of thrust. A tiller or till is a lever used to steer a vehicle. The mechanism is primarily used in watercraft, where it is attached to an outboard motor, rudder post or stock to provide leverage in the form of torque for the helmsman to turn the rudder.
