Alabama Rural Heritage Center
The Alabama Rural Heritage Center is a regional heritage organization located in Thomaston, Alabama that was established in 1986, but closed permanently as of January, 2022. It was established by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and local volunteers. The center, now defunct, was headquartered in the old home economics building on the former Marengo County High School campus, which was repurposed by Auburn University's Rural Studio. The center is run by the non-profit Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation, but is no longer operational. Before closing doors, The Rural Heritage Center housed a combination folk art gallery, theater, restaurant, community meeting place, and a commercial production kitchen. The center produces local food products under the "Mama Nem's" trademark. Thomaston, Alabama
Thomaston is a town in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census the population was 326, down from 417 at the 2010 census. History Thomaston was platted in 1901 when the railroad was extended to that point. Thomaston was named for C. B. Thomas, a town promoter. A post office called Thomaston has been in operation since 1892. It was incorporated on November 15, 1901. Historic sites Thomaston has one historic district, the Thomaston Central Historic District, which encompasses the core of the town. Additionally, there are three individually listed properties on the National Register of Historic Places: the Thomaston Colored Institute, C. S. Golden House, and Patrick Farrish House. Rural Studio
The Rural Studio is a design-build architecture studio run by Auburn University. It aims to teach students about the social responsibilities of the profession of architecture while also providing safe, well-constructed and inspirational homes and buildings for poor communities in rural west Alabama, part of the so-called " Black Belt". The studio was founded in 1993 by architects Samuel Mockbee and D. K. Ruth. It is led by UK-born architect Andrew Freear. Each year the program builds several projects - a house by the third-year students and two to three thesis projects by groups of 3-5 fifth-year students.
