Akira Yamaguchi (山口 晃) (born 1969 in Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese contemporary artist. Biography Born in Tokyo, he grew up in the city of Kiryū, Gunma Prefecture. He received his B.A. in oil painting (1994) and M.A. in oil painting (1996) from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Yamaguchi designed the cover art for the album V by the nu-jazz music duo United Future Organization and illustrated the book Chronicles of My Life: An American in the Heart of Japan by Donald Keene. He lives and works in Tokyo. His artwork has been exhibited worldwide. He is represented by . Style Yamaguchi's painting style combines contemporary oil painting techniques with the traditional Japanese composition style known as ''Yamato-e''. Kiryū, Gunma
is a city located in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. , the city had an estimated population of 108,991 in 49,745 households, and a population density of 400 persons per km2. The total area of the city is . Geography Kiryū is in the southeast part of Gunma, in the northern Kantō Plain near the Tochigi border. It is located approximately northwest of Tokyo. Donald Lawrence Keene (June 18, 1922 – February 24, 2019) was an American-born Japanese scholar, historian, teacher, writer and translator of Japanese literature. Keene was University Professor emeritus and Shincho Professor Emeritus of Japanese Literature at Columbia University, where he taught for over fifty years. Soon after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, he retired from Columbia, moved to Japan permanently, and acquired citizenship under the name . This was also his poetic and occasional nickname, spelled in the ''ateji'' form . Early life and education Keene was born in 1922 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York City and attended James Madison High School. Yamato-e
is a style of Japanese painting inspired by Tang dynasty paintings and fully developed by the late Heian period. It is considered the classical Japanese style. From the Muromachi period (15th century), the term Yamato-e has been used to distinguish work from contemporary Chinese-style paintings , which were inspired by Chinese Song and Yuan-era ink wash paintings. Characteristic features of Yamato-e include many small figures and careful depictions of details of buildings and other objects, the selection of only some elements of a scene to be fully depicted, the rest either being ignored or covered by a "floating cloud", an oblique view from above showing interiors of buildings as though through a cutaway roof, and very stylised depiction of landscape.
