Akin Free Library
__NOTOC__ The Akin Free Library on Quaker Hill is a historic eclectic late Victorian stone building in the hamlet of Quaker Hill, town of Pawling, Dutchess County, New York, USA, listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic place of local significance since 1991. The Akin Free Library was a gift from the Quaker Albert J. Akin (1803–1903), founder of the Bank of Pawling and the Mizzentop Hotel on Quaker Hill. The building was designed by the architect John A. Wood and constructed between 1898 and 1908. It is a 2½-story, ''T''-plan, stone building on a raised basement with an engaged three-story central clock tower and rear annex. The building features an entrance portico, bracketed sheet copper cornice, and standing seam copper roof. Its design is Victorian eclectic. Jon Akin
Jon Akin is a retired American soccer forward who is the head coach of the Oglethorpe University men's soccer team. Player Youth Akin graduated successfully from Pensacola Catholic High School. He was a four-year starter on his high school soccer team and played for the North Florida Futbol Club which won the 1995 Florida Youth Soccer Championships. Akin attended the Saint Leo University, playing on the men's NCAA Division II soccer team from 1995 to 1998. He is second on the Lions' career goals and points lists and holds the school record for career assists. Akin was selected as a 1996 Second Team and a 1997 First Team Division II All American. A warren is a network of wild rodent or lagomorph, typically rabbit burrows. Domestic warrens are artificial, enclosed establishment of animal husbandry dedicated to the raising of rabbits for meat and fur. The term evolved from the medieval Anglo-Norman concept of free warren, which had been, essentially, the equivalent of a hunting license for a given woodland. Todd Akin
William Todd Akin (July 5, 1947 – October 3, 2021) was an American politician who served as the U.S. representative for from 2001 to 2013. He was a member of the Republican Party. Born in New York City, Akin grew up in the Greater St. Louis area. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, Akin served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and worked in the computer and steel industries. In 1988, he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives. He served in the state house until 2000, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, in which he served until 2013. Akin's Congressional career ended after he lost a bid to unseat Democratic U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill in the 2012 election. Theron Akin (May 23, 1855 – March 26, 1933) was an American politician who served one term as a U.S. Representative from New York from 1911 to 1913. Biography Born in Johnstown, New York, on May 23, 1855 Akin was the son of Ethan and Susan (St. John) Akin, and attended the common schools of Amsterdam, New York, and also was privately tutored at home. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, and graduated from the New York Dental College and practiced for twelve years in Amsterdam, New York. Philip Akin (born April 18, 1950) is a Canadian actor. Akin has had roles in major American films such as '' The Sum of All Fears'', ''S.W.A.T.'', and '' Get Rich or Die Tryin'''. He has also done much voice work, including voicing the character of Bishop for the ''X-Men'' animated series and Tripp Hansen in ''Monster Force''. Life and career Akin was born in Kingston, Jamaica, as a middle brother of five sons. His parents moved to Oshawa, Ontario in 1953, and he and his brothers followed suit the next year. Louis Benton Akin (1868–1913) was an American painter and illustrator of the early twentieth century. He is best known for his landscapes of the Grand Canyon and his depictions of Hopi cultural life. Akin was born in Portland, Oregon, on June 6, 1868. He began his early career there as a sign painter. In 1893, he moved to New York City to attend art school at the Art League of New York. For the following several years he worked as an illustrator for books and magazines. However, an obituary characterized his work during this time as, "not very important." Around 1903, Akin relocated to the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. He lived with the Hopi for a few years and painted many aspects of their daily life. Keegan Lee Akin (born April 1, 1995) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2020. Amateur career Akin attended Bullock Creek High School in Midland, Michigan, and Western Michigan University, where he played college baseball for the Western Michigan Broncos. John Aikin (Unitarian)
John Aikin (1713–1780) was an English Unitarian scholar and theological tutor, closely associated with Warrington Academy, a prominent dissenting academy. Life He was born in 1713, in London. His father, a linen-draper, came originally from Kirkcudbright, in southern Scotland. He was placed for a short time as French clerk in a mercantile house, but entered Kibworth Academy, then run by Philip Doddridge, for whom Aikin was the first pupil. He then went to Aberdeen University, where the anti-Calvinist opinions of the tutors gradually led him to Low Arianism, as it was then called, which afterwards became the distinguishing feature of the Warrington Academy. Aberdeen subsequently conferred upon him the degree of D.D.
