Kenneth Bulmer
Henry Kenneth Bulmer (14 January 1921 – 16 December 2005) was a British author, primarily of science fiction. Life Born in London, he married Pamela Buckmaster on 7 March 1953. They had one son and two daughters, and they divorced in 1981. Bulmer lived in Tunbridge Wells, Kent where he died on 16 December 2005. Career in science fiction A prolific writer, Bulmer penned over 160 novels and numerous short stories, both under his real name and various pseudonyms. For instance, his long-running Dray Prescot series of planetary romances was initially published as Alan Burt Akers, and later as by the first-person protagonist of the series, Prescot himself. Bulmer's works are popular in translation, particularly Germany, to the extent that in some cases they have been published only in German editions, with the original English-language versions remaining unpublished. John Fellows Akers
John Fellows Akers (December 28, 1934 – August 22, 2014) was an American businessman. He was president (1983-1989), chief executive officer (1985-1993) and chairman (1986-1993) of IBM. Education Akers attended Yale, and while there became a brother of Delta Kappa Epsilon (Phi chapter). IBM Akers joined IBM in 1960 after serving in the Navy as a jet pilot. Akers said in 2010 “We were very square. We wore the blue suits, white shirts with button-down collars, striped ties, fedoras and wingtip shoes. The customers felt they could count on us.” Akers became CEO in 1985. He benefitted from the support of one of his predecessors, Frank Cary. In 1989, a young Sam Palmisano was appointed as Aker's assistant; decades later Palmisano would serve as chairman and CEO. Akers was chief executive during IBM's decline in the mid-1980s and early 1990s. Thomas Dale Akers (born May 20, 1951) is a former American astronaut in NASA's Space Shuttle program. Education Akers was the valedictorian of his 29-member 1969 senior class from Eminence, Missouri. He worked summers as a park ranger in the 80,000 acre federal wilderness that borders Eminence. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology) with B.S. and M.S. degrees in applied mathematics in 1973 and 1975, respectively. At the age of 24, he returned to Eminence to become its math teacher, and subsequently its high school principal. In 1979, when a United States Air Force recruiter left brochures on his desk for his students, it was Akers who decided to sign up. He was selected for the astronaut program in 1987 and officially became an astronaut in 1988. Susan Grey Akers (April 3, 1889 – January 30, 1984) was an American librarian and the first woman to hold an academic deanship at the University of North Carolina. Biography Akers was born on April 3, 1889, in Richmond, Kentucky, to Clara Elizabeth Harris and James Tazewell Akers, a language professor at the University of Kentucky. She received a bachelor's degree with a major of Latin and minor in Greek from the University of Kentucky in 1909, following which she taught Latin one year in a high school in Kentucky and fifth and sixth grades one year in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1911, she began work at a public library in Louisville, Kentucky, going on to Library School at the University of Wisconsin in 1913, where she befriended director Mary Imogene Hazeltine. Ronald Louis Akers (born January 7, 1939 in New Albany, Indiana) is an American criminologist and professor emeritus of criminology and law at the University of Florida's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Career Akers taught sociology at the University of Washington from 1965–72, criminology at Florida State University from 1972–4, and sociology at the University of Iowa from 1974–80. He chaired the department of sociology at the University of Iowa from 1978 to 1980, when he became a professor at the University of Florida. Rob Akers
Robert George Akers (17 October 1941 – 28 October 2006) was an architect and Liberal Party Member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, for the seat of Pine Rivers 1974–1983. Later he was Chairman of Shire of Pine Rivers from 1985 to 1994. In 1995, he stood for the State seat of Kurwongbah as an independent. Akers was the second son of Pine Rivers Councillor James Henry Akers (1913–1977) and M. B. S. (Molly) Akers OAM (died 1999). He attended Brisbane Grammar School. Marriages Akers married (the second marriage for both) fellow parliamentarian Rosemary Kyburz while in parliament, the first time sitting members had married each other. They have two sons. Michelle Anne Akers (formerly Akers-Stahl; born February 1, 1966) is an American former soccer player who starred in the 1991 and 1999 Women's World Cup and 1996 Olympics victories by the United States. At the 1991 World Cup, she won the Golden Shoe as the top scorer, with ten goals. Akers is regarded as one of the greatest female football players in history. Landen Akers (born July 7, 1997) is an American football wide receiver for the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League (UFL). He played college football at Iowa State. Early life and high school Akers grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and attended Washington High School, where he played baseball and football and ran track.
