Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC is a hotel chain holding company based in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan conglomerate Aitken Spence is the parent company of Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings. The company operates hotels in Sri Lanka, Maldives, Oman and India. Aitken Spence ventured into the hospitality business by building two seaside resorts designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The company was founded in 1978 as Ahungalla Hotels Ltd and is the proprietor of the Hotel Triton. Ahungalla Hotels Ltd was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1980. In 1994, after acquiring Aitken Spence Hotels Ltd, the company gained control of the properties of the hotel chain. Kandalama Hotel and the Tea Factory Hotel commenced operations in 1994 and 1996 respectively. The company opened its first resort in the Maldives in 1993. Heritance Ahungalla, formerly known as the Triton Hotel, is a luxury five-star hotel in Ahungalla, Sri Lanka. Triton Hotel was designed by Geoffrey Bawa and opened in 1981. Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings is the owner and operator of the hotel. The hotel is managed as a part of Aiken Spence's Heritance Hotels and Resorts brand. Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings was incorporated in 1978 as Ahungalla Hotels Ltd and listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1980. The hotel was originally named Triton Hotel after the Greek god Triton. Ahungalla Hotels Ltd became the holding company of the Aitken Spence hotel chain in 1994. The company adopted its present name, Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings, in 1997. The ''Daily News'' is an English-language newspaper in Sri Lanka. It is now published by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House), a government-owned corporation. The newspaper commenced publishing on 3 January 1918. D. R. Wijewardena was its founder. The present-day newspaper is written as a broadsheet, with photographs printed both in color and black and white. Weekday printings include the main section, containing news on national affairs, international affairs, business, political analysis, sports, editorials and opinions. Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL) is a Sri Lankan media company which publishes a number of national newspapers and magazines. Formerly known as Wijeya Publications Limited, WNL was founded in 1979 by Ranjith Wijewardene, son of media mogul D. R. Wijewardena. Ranjith Wijewardene had been chairman of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited before it was taken over by the government in July 1973. Ranjith Wijewardene bought the trade names and library of the Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL) group after it closed down in January 1985. He subsequently started various newspapers using the names of former TOCL publications: Irida Lankadeepa (1986), ''Sunday Times'' (1987), ''Lankadeepa'' (1991) and ''Midweek Mirror'' (1995). ''The Sunday Times'' is a weekly Sri Lankan broadsheet initially published by the now defunct Times Group, until 1991, when it was taken over by Wijeya Newspapers.
