Aisling Judge
Aisling Judge is an Irish scientist from Kinsale, County Cork. She was the winner of the 42nd Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in 2006 at the age of 13. She was the youngest winner in the history of the competition, until her record was taken two years later by thirteen-year-old Emer Jones from Tralee in County Kerry. Judge later finished in third place at the 18th European Union Contest for Young Scientists. Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition At the time of her win Judge was a second-year student at Kinsale Community School in Kinsale. Her project involved the creation of a device to demonstrate when packaged food had gone out of date. It was called "The development and evaluation of a biological food spoilage indicator". The judges said her work involved "a highly innovative and creative use of experimental biology" and that it was "very impressive" and "a novel use of technology". Mary Hanafin
Mary Hanafin (born 1 June 1959) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport from 2010 to 2011, Deputy Leader of Fianna Fáil from January 2011 to March 2011, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation from January 2011 to March 2011, Minister for Social and Family Affairs from 2008 to 2011, Minister for Education and Science from 2004 to 2008, Government Chief Whip from 2002 to 2004 and Minister of State for Children from 2000 to 2002. The Southern Star (County Cork)
''The Southern Star'' is a weekly regional newspaper based in Skibbereen, County Cork in Ireland and was established in 1889 as the ''Cork County Southern Star'', by brothers Florence and John O'Sullivan. One of its rival newspapers in the 19th century was ''The Skibbereen Eagle'', founded in 1857. It had become "famous by declaring it was 'keeping an eye on the Czar of Russia' over his expansionist designs on China". On the centenary of the event, Brendan McWilliams gave a slightly different account in ''The Irish Times'', saying that on 5 September 1898 ''The Skibbereen Eagles editorial stated "We will still keep our eye on the Emperor of Russia and on all such despotic enemies, whether at home or abroad, of human progression and man's natural rights.". Young Scientist And Technology Exhibition
The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, commonly called the Young Scientist Exhibition, is an Irish annual school students' science competition that has been held in the Royal Dublin Society, Dublin, Ireland, every January since the competition was founded by Tom Burke and Tony Scott in 1965. This Competition The purpose of the competition is to encourage interest in science in secondary schools. For the 51st year of the competition in 2016, there were over 2,000 entries, from 396 schools which was the highest number ever, 550 of which were selected for the Exhibition at the RDS. Students apply to participate in the competition. Their science project entries are evaluated by judges and about one-third of applicants are accepted to participate in the public exhibition.
