Sir Gaëtan Duval Airport is an airport located near Plaine Corail on Rodrigues, an island dependency of Mauritius. It is named after Gaëtan Duval (1930–1996), a former deputy Mauritian prime minister, who oversaw much of the development of Rodrigues. UN/LOCODE, the United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations, is a geographic coding scheme developed and maintained by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). UN/LOCODE assigns codes to locations used in trade and transport with functions such as seaports, rail and road terminals, airports, Postal Exchange Office and border crossing points. The first issue in 1981 contained codes for 8,000 locations. The version from 2011 contained codes for about 82,000 locations. Structure UN/LOCODEs have five characters. The first two letters code a country by the table defined in ISO 3166-1 alpha-2. The three remaining characters code a location within that country. Transportation in Mauritius is characterized by the network of roadways, ports, and airports. The island was originally only accessible by boat until 1922, when the first flight landed in Mauritius. Rail transport A public and industrial railway system existed from the 1860s to the 1960s. Due to persistent unprofitability from 1948 to 1953, it was finally closed in 1964. From 1964 to 2020, there were no railways in Mauritius. To cope with increasing road traffic congestion, a light rail system, Metro Express, has been proposed between Curepipe and Port Louis. The project consists of a number of phases; the first phase, Port Louis to Rose Hill, went operational in January 2020. When completed, the system would cover a distance of some 25 km, with some 19 stations, many located in town centres along the route with existing transport terminals.
