Driving from Reykjavík to Akureyri takes 4-5 hours compared to 45 minutes flight time, driving from Reykjavík to Egilsstaðir takes 9 hours compared to 1 hour flight time. Grímsey
Grímsey () is a small Icelandic island, off the north coast of the main island of Iceland, straddling the Arctic Circle. In January 2018 Grímsey had 61 inhabitants. Before 2009, Grimsey constituted the ''hreppur'' (municipality) of Grímseyjarhreppur . In that year, island residents voted to join the municipality with Akureyri. The island's only settlement is Sandvík. Geography Grímsey is the northernmost inhabited Icelandic territory; the rapidly disappearing islet of Kolbeinsey lies some farther north, but is uninhabitable. The closest land is the island of Flatey, Skjálfandi, to the south. The Arctic Circle currently runs through the island, a feature of interest to many visitors, while the entirety of mainland Iceland lies south of the Arctic Circle. Gjögur Airport
Gjögur Airport ( is, Gjögurflugvöllur ) is an airport serving the small population of the Árneshreppur district in the Westfjords of north-west Iceland, on the coast of Húnaflói bay. Operations It is staffed part-time by an AFIS controller, and only opens for Norlandair flights, which are twice a week in the winter and once a week in the summer. Gjögur airport is very important to the local population. In the winter, the airport is the only means of access to the entire district, as the access road is impassable. The government of Iceland requires these flights in order to supply the population with food and other goods, and provide passenger transport. Norlandair is the only airline that flies here. The airport has runway lights, PAPI lights, and taxiway lights. It has an instrument approach using the on-field Gjogur non-directional beacon (Ident: GJ), but this is only short range, e.g. it can be picked up from nearby Hólmavík airfield. Fáskrúðsfjörður
Fáskrúðsfjörður (; previously named also Búðir ) is a village (''þorp'') in eastern Iceland. It has a population of 662 (as of 2011) and constitutes one of the villages composing the municipality of Fjarðabyggð. Geography Fáskrúðsfjörður, located on the same-named fjord, lies between Reyðarfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður. It is one of the easternmost settlements of Iceland. The other neighbouring villages which compose the municipality of Fjarðabyggð are: Eskifjörður (1,043 inh.), Mjóifjörður (35 inh.), Neskaupstaður (1,437 inh.), Reyðarfjörður (1,102 inh.) and Stöðvarfjörður (203 inh.). Egilsstaðir Airport ( is, Egilsstaðaflugvöllur ) is a single-runway international airport in Egilsstaðir, Iceland. The main carrier is Icelandair with flights to Reykjavík. The airport has several car rental options available, such as Höldur/Europcar, Hertz and Avis/Budget. Egilsstaðir also serves as a diversion airport for Keflavik International Airport located 415 kilometers southwest of Egilstaðir. History Originally a gravel runway was made in 1951 and in 1954 it was equipped with runway lights. On the 23rd of September 1993, a new asphalt runway replaced the older gravel runway on the other side of the terminal. The air terminal was originally built in 1968, but was rebuilt and expanded during 1987 to 1999. A new arrivals hall was opened in 2007.
