''Airone'' ( en, Heron) is an Italian science magazine devoted to science and technology issues. It is published in Milan, Italy, by Editoriale Giorgio Mondadori (former company, now a division of Cairo Editore, a subsidiary of Cairo Communication). History and profile ''Airone'' was founded in 1981 as an ecologist magazine primarily containing articles about animal world, nature, ethnology and geography. The founder and first director was Egidio Gavazzi. It was for years the most widely circulated scientific magazine in Italy, with a peak of average circulation of about 250,000 copies per month. Between 1985 and 1986 it co-produced with RAI the nature documentary series ''Pan''. In 1989 it was launched a spin-off for the younger readers, ''Airone Junior'', renamed ''Dodo'' in April 1995. Cairo Communication S.p.A. is an Italian media and publishing company based in Milan. The shares of the company float in Borsa Italiana. Urbano Cairo, via UT Communications, UT Belgium Holding, owned 50.101% stake of the company. In Italy there are many magazines. Following the end of World War II the number of weekly magazines significantly expanded. From 1970 feminist magazines began to increase in number in the country. The number of consumer magazines was 975 in 1995 and 782 in 2004. There are also Catholic magazines and newspapers in the country. A total of fifty-eight Catholic magazines was launched between 1867 and 1922. From 1923 to 1943, the period of the Italian fascism, Fascist Regime, only ten new Catholic magazines was started. The period from 1943 to the end of the Second Vatican Council thirty-three new magazines were established. Until 2010 an additional eighty-six Catholic magazines were founded.
