Aire-sur-l'Adour
Aire-sur-l'Adour (; oc, Aira d'Ador or simply ) is a commune in the Landes department, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, southwestern France. It lies on the river Adour in the wine area of southwest France. It is an episcopal see of the Diocese of Aire and Dax. The nearest large towns are Mont-de-Marsan to the north and Pau to the south. History Aire (''Atura'', ''Vicus Julii'') once was the residence of the kings of the Visigoths. Here in 506 Alaric II drew up his code, the ''Breviarium Alaricianum''. Famed bullfighter Iván Fandiño died in Aire-sur-l'Adour after being gored by a bull on 17 June 2017. Saint Quiteria
Quiteria ( es, Quiteria; ca, Quitèria; oc, Quiteira; french: Quitterie; pt, Quitéria) was a second-century virgin martyr and saint about whom nothing is certain except her name and her cult. She appears in the ''Roman Martyrology'', but not in any other ancient calendars (such as the ''Martyrologium Hieronymianum''). Name ''Quiteria'' may be derived from ''Kythere'' (or ''Kyteria'', ''Kuteria''), a title applied to the Phoenician goddess Astarte which meant "the red one", or from (the possibly related name) ''Cytherea'', an epithet of the Greek goddess Aphrodite because she was born on the island of Kythira. Legend She is said to have been born in Bracara (now Braga, Portugal) to Lucius Catilius Serves, Roman governor of Gallaecia and Lusitania, and Calcia, his wife. Iván Fandiño
Iván Fandiño Barros (September 29, 1980 – June 17, 2017) was a Spanish bullfighter. Fandiño died of injuries he sustained after being gored by a bull on June 17, 2017, in Aire-sur-l'Adour, France. Fandiño stumbled after he tripped on a cape used to engage and distract the bull. The bull then pierced his torso from behind with its horns, ripping a hole into his lung and his stomach as well as his vena cava, which fatally wounded him. The Diocese of Aire and Dax (Latin'':'' ''Dioecesis Adurensis et Aquae Augustae''; French: ''Diocèse d'Aire et Dax'') is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in France. The Adour (; eu, Aturri; oc, Ador) is a river in southwestern France. It rises in High-Bigorre (Pyrenees), in the commune of Aspin-Aure, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay) near Bayonne. Aire Cathedral
Aire Cathedral (french: Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Aire) is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in the town of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the Landes département of France. It was the seat of the Bishops of Aire until the diocese was abolished in 1801 and again from 1822 when the diocese was restored; in 1857 it was renamed the Diocese of Aire and Dax. In 1933 the bishop moved to Dax, making Dax Cathedral his seat, when the cathedral at Aire became a co-cathedral. It was listed as a national monument in 1906.
