Air Whitsunday is a charter airline based in Australia that operates a fleet of seaplanes. The company also operates tours. History Air Whitsunday pioneered seaplane services to the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Island in April 1973, using a Lake Buccaneer light amphibian aircraft. In 1977, it moved its operational base from Long Island (Whitsunday Islands), Long Island in the Whitsunday Islands to Whitsunday Airport on the mainland, later purchasing the airport. By 1981, the airline was operating a fleet of five Buccaneers, which were supplemented by a Partenavia P.68 in 1982 and a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander in 1983, which were used on sightseeing flights and for scheduled passenger services to Mackay Airport. 1983 also saw the airline purchase two Grumman G-73 Mallard, Grumman Mallard amphibians to supplement the smaller Buccaneers on tourist flights out to the Barrier Reef as well as to run a scheduled service to Townsville. Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia. Whitehaven Beach
Whitehaven Beach is on Whitsunday Island, Australia. The island is accessible by boat, seaplane & helicopter from Airlie Beach, as well as Hamilton Island. It lies across from Stockyard Beach, better known as Chalkie's Beach, on Haslewood Island. The beach is known for its crystal white silica sands and turquoise coloured waters. The beach has tour barbeque and camping facilities. History The beach was named and discovered in 1879 by Staff Commander EP Bedwell. 'Whitehaven' specifically originates from the English town of the same name, it was one of the many names, from the then English county of Cumberland, which Bedwell brought to the area. The de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver is a single-engined high-wing propeller-driven short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft developed and manufactured by de Havilland Canada. It has been primarily operated as a bush plane and has been used for a wide variety of utility roles, such as cargo and passenger hauling, aerial application (crop dusting and aerial topdressing), and civil aviation duties. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, de Havilland Canada decided to orient itself towards civilian operators. Based on feedback from pilots, the company decided that the envisioned aircraft should have excellent STOL performance, all-metal construction, and accommodate many features sought by the operators of bush planes. The production model was certified by the FAA in October 1984 and its Cargomaster freighter variant was developed for FedEx.
