Air Officer Scotland
Air Officer Scotland is the senior Royal Air Force officer in Scotland. At present, Air Vice-Marshal R Paterson is a reservist. In 1962, the Air Officer Scotland assumed responsibility for Northern Ireland, become Air Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland. In December 1994 the AOSNI post departed Pitreavie Castle (the AOC Northern Maritime Air Region post was being disestablished). The station commander of RAF Leuchars become an air commodore with the additional role of being Air Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Royal Navy equivalent is Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland while the British Army equivalent is General Officer Scotland. Royal Air Force
The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's air and space force. It was formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, becoming the first independent air force in the world, by regrouping the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). Following the Allied victory over the Central Powers in 1918, the RAF emerged as the largest air force in the world at the time. Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history. In particular, it played a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain. Harry Atkinson (RAF Officer)
Air Commodore Richard John Atkinson, (born c. 1964), is a senior Royal Air Force officer and former Air Officer Scotland. RAF career Atkinson joined the Royal Air Force in 1982. He was appointed Officer Commanding No. 25 (Fighter) Squadron at RAF Leeming in 2003, Deputy Director, Strategic Planning in the Ministry of Defence in 2005 and was then deployed as Deputy Director, Air Control Element, Headquarters International Security Assistance Force, Kabul in 2008. Air Chief Marshal Sir Simon Bryant, (born 20 June 1956) is a former Royal Air Force officer, who served as Commander-in-Chief of Air Command, and he was the second-most senior officer in the service until this post was dis-established in March 2012. RAF Pitreavie Castle
Royal Air Force Pitreavie Castle or RAF Pitreavie Castle was a station of the Royal Air Force located at Pitreavie Castle in Dunfermline and near Rosyth, Fife, Scotland. Built in the early 17th century, the castle was sold to the Air Ministry in 1938. An underground bunker was constructed and the station was used to coordinate the operations of RAF Coastal Command and the Royal Navy during the Second World War. The station was subsequently used as a UK and NATO maritime headquarters before closing in 1996. It is now in residential use. Air vice-marshal (AVM) is a two-star air officer rank which originated in and continues to be used by the Royal Air Force. The rank is also used by the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence and it is sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure. Air vice-marshal is a two-star rank and has a NATO ranking code of OF-7. It is equivalent to a rear-admiral in the Royal Navy or a major-general in the British Army or the Royal Marines. In other NATO forces, such as the United States Armed Forces and the Canadian Armed Forces, the equivalent two-star rank is major general.
