Air France Accidents And Incidents
Air France has been in operation since 1933. Its aircraft have been involved in a number of major accidents and incidents. The deadliest accident of the airline occurred on June 1, 2009, when Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330-203, flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed into the Atlantic Ocean with 228 fatalities. A selected list of the most noteworthy of these events is given below. 1930s 1940s 1950s ;22 January 1950: A Douglas DC-4-1009 (F-BBDB) burned out during maintenance at Orly Airport. During work on an engine, an inspection lamp fell into a tub of oil and fuel. The lamp glass broke, igniting the oil and fuel in the tub. The left wing was in flames before the fire was extinguished. The Caudron Simoun was a 1930s French four-seat touring monoplane. It was used as a mail plane by Air Bleu, flew record-setting long-range flights, and was also used as a liaison aircraft by the ''Armée de l'Air'' during World War II. Cologne Butzweilerhof Airport
The Butzweilerhof was the civil airport of Cologne. It was established as a training airfield in 1912 and saw airline service from 1922 until the 1950s. It was replaced by the Cologne Bonn Airport. The airport buildings from 1935-36 are listed monuments and a rare example of airport architecture from the Interwar Period. From 1951 to 1967 it was operated by the Royal Air Force as RAF Butzweilerhof. Potez 62
Potez 62 was a French twin-engine civil airliner, designed by Henry Potez in 1934. The French military adapted this air-frame two-years later to create the Potez 650. History The prototype of the Potez 62 made its maiden flight on January 28, 1935. The aircraft had been developed from the Potez 54 bomber and was constructed as a high-wing monoplane. The wooden fuselage had a composite coating, whereas the wings were covered with fabric and the leading edge was made out of metal. The aircraft was propelled by two Gnôme & Rhône radial engines whose 14 cylinders produced some 870 hp. The engines were mounted in two side cradles, fixed to the fuselage and to the wings. The cabin was divided into two compartments and could accommodate 14 to 16 people. A version equipped with Hispano-Suiza V-engines was ordered by Air France in 1936. The Latécoère 300 series of aircraft were a group of civil and military flying boats. They were manufactured by French aircraft manufacturer Latécoère in the 1930s. A single Latécoère 300 was built; it was flown for the first time in 1931 and sank the same year. It was rebuilt and flown again in 1932, being named ''Croix du Sud'' ("Southern Cross"). Description The 300 was a monoplane of parasol wing construction. It was powered by four engines, each of which produced 650 hp, arranged in two push-pull pairs. The 300 set an international aviation record for seaplanes on 31 December 1933, by flying non-stop between Berre Lake near Marseille and Saint-Louis, Senegal.
