Ainsley Thomas Battles (born November 6, 1978) is a former American football player. He attended Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia. After finishing high school, he went on to play football for Vanderbilt University. After finishing school at Vanderbilt, he went on to be a professional American football player, safety in the National Football League. He played four seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Safety is a position in gridiron football on the defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field. While American (11-player) formations generally use two safeties, Canadian (12-player) formations generally have one safety and two defensive halfbacks, a position not used in the American game. During this time, teams sometimes congregate at an outside location, usually a university, to conduct training camp for at least the first few weeks. This is similar to baseball's spring training.
