Ahmed Saleem
Ahmed Saleem is a Maldivian diplomat who is currently serving as Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives. Previously, he was the 11th Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) from 2012 to 2014. From May 2015 to February 2020 he served as High Commissioner of Maldives to Pakistan and non-resident Ambassador accredited to Nepal. Early years and education Saleem was educated in Malé, Maldives and in New Delhi, India. Diplomatic career Saleem joined the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1968. He had a distinguished career spanning for more than 30 years, during which he served in various capacities in the Ministry, such as Controller of Immigration & Emigration, Chief of Protocol, Under-Secretary (Head of the Multilateral Department) and Secretary. SAARC Secretary General
Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, is head of a SAARC Secretariat, which is headquartered in Kathmandu, Nepal. SAARC is an economic and geopolitical union between the eight South Asian member nations, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Secretary-General is appointed for a three-year term by election by a council of Ministers from member states. Secretary-General is assisted by eight deputies, one from each nation, who also reside in Kathmandu. Arjun Bahadur Thapa ( ne, अर्जुन बहादुर थापा; born 12 January 1956) is a Nepali diplomat and former General Secretary of SAARC. Personal life He is married to Pabitra Thapa and has three kids: Anuja, Regina, and Ajit Thapa. He is the eighth descendant of Anglo-Nepalese war ''Bhakti Thapa'' Bhakti Thapa. Education He completed his Masters in International Law (Honours) at Peoples' Friendship University, Moscow, in 1983 and a diploma in Environmental Management at The University of Adelaide, Australia, in 1994. Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed
Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed is a Maldivian diplomat, and was the Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). She was the first woman to hold this post since the organization's inception in 1985. She was appointed Secretary-General at the Thirty-third Session of the SAARC Council of Ministers in February 2011, and assumed office in Kathmandu on 1 March 2011. She succeeded India's Sheel Kant Sharma, whose term ended in February. She was previously the Maldives’ Attorney General, and also served as the Maldivian Government’s Envoy for South Asia. She holds a master's degree in Law from the Graduate School of Law and Politics, Osaka University, Japan. She has a PhD from Leicester University, UK. Hassan Evan Naseem
Hassan Evan Naseem ( dv, ހަސަން އީވާން ނަސީމް; 1984 – September 19, 2003), commonly referred to as Evan Naseem, is the person whose death became a lever for the current, open, political reform activities in the Maldives. He was serving at Maafushi Prison for drug offences when he was beaten to death by the NSS personnel of the Security unit during a riot which endangered the lives of the prison security personnel. Early life Evan attended Majeediyya School for his secondary education. He was jailed several times for drug offences and other related crimes. Dispute between inmates On September 19, 2003, inmates of Evan Naseem's cell crossed the partitions, on two occasions, to assault a person named Ali Didi who was detained in a different cell. 2003 Maldives Civil Unrest
On Saturday September 20, 2003 civil unrest broke out in Malé, the capital city of the Maldives. This unrest was provoked by the death of Hassan Evan Naseem at Maafushi Prison - located on a separate inhabited island - and the subsequent shooting at the same prison, that killed 3 and injured 17 others. Many government buildings, vehicles and other public properties were set on fire, some were destroyed. The government controlled the unrest by around 23:00 and declared a State of Emergency in Malé and nearby islands. Late night curfews were enforced from 22:00 to 04:30 in Malé for more than a month following the rioting. Naseem's death On Friday September 19, 2003, Naseem, who was serving at Maafushi Jail for drug abuse related offenses, was beaten by the NSS personnel of the security unit in the jail.
