Ahmed Hassan Diria
Ahmed Hassan Diria (July 13, 1937 – March 13, 2005) was a Somali Tanzanian politician and diplomat. He was born in Raha Leo, Zanzibar and was educated in local primary and secondary schools. He started working in government service in 1954, with a three-year period of study at the College of Philosophy in Ghana. Following the Zanzibar Revolution of 1964, he was appointed the area commissioner for Pemba. He remained in this position until 1965, when he joined the Tanzanian foreign service. He was the ambassador to Congo from 1970 to 1972; the high commissioner of New Delhi, India from 1971 to 1978; the ambassador to Japan from 1979 to 1984; and the ambassador to Germany in 1984. After his foreign service, he moved back to Tanzania to become a member of parliament and held various positions as minister. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation is a government ministry of Tanzania. The ministry is headed by Liberata Mulamula, and its offices are located at Mtumba in Dodoma. History The ministry of foreign affairs was set up following Tanganyikan independence in 1961, but until 1963, it was a department of the prime minister's office with Oscar Kambona as the first minister. The ministry of external affairs was created in 1964 with Stephen Mhando as its first minister. The name of the ministry has been changed three times since 1975, first to foreign affairs and then to the Ministry Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Islam in Tanzania is the second largest religion in the country behind Christianity. According to a 2020 estimate by Pew research center, Muslims represent 34.1% of the total population. The faith was introduced by merchants visiting the Swahili coast, as it became connected to a larger maritime trade network dominated by Muslims. This would lead to local conversions and assimilations of foreign Muslims, ultimately causing the eventual formation of several officially Muslim political entities in the region. Zanzibar (; ; ) is an insular semi-autonomous province which united with Tanganyika in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. It is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island.
