Ahmad Mashhadi
Ahmad Mashhadi, also known as Mir Seyyed Ahmad, was an important Persian Nastaliq calligrapher in the 16th century. He was from Mashhad. He was also a poet and some of his original poems still exist. Biography Mashhadi learnt calligraphy art in Herat under Mir Ali Heravi. After that Shaybanids captured the city, both of them immigrated to Bukhara. After Heravi's death, he worked some time as a scrivener in the library of Abdolaziz Khan Ozbak. When Abdolaziz Khan died, he came back to his home town. He worked there as a scrivener in the court of Tahmasp I and his successor Ismail II. He died in 1578 in Mazandaran. Golestan-e Honar
''Golestan-e Honar'' ( fa, گلستان هنر; also Romanized as ''Golestān-e Honar'') is a book written by Ahmad Monshi Ghomi. It is one of few sources, which gives valuable information about calligraphers and painters and the history of art of bookmaking in Persia in the late Timurid to the middle of Safavid period and contains first-hand information on some of the artists and patrons, whom the author and his family members came into contact with. The book was written in 1598 in the Safavid era. In 1607, another edition of this book was published with some deletions and additions in the previous edition. Ahmad Monshi Ghomi
Ahmad Monshi Ghomi, also known as Ghazi Ahmad, was a Persian author and calligrapher. He was the son of ''Sharaf ed-Din Hossein Ghomi'', who was the scrivener of Sam Mirza Safavi in Herat. Ghazi Ahmad was born in 1547 in Qom. When he was 11 years old, he moved with his father to Mashhad and spent 20 years in that city. Under protection of Ibrahim Mirza, he took lessons from the famous masters like Shah Mahmud Nishapuri, Mir Ahmad Mashhadi and Malek Deylami until the age of 31. Ebrahim Mirza was a well-educated man in the field of art and science and some of prominent poets, calligraphers and painters worked in his library. Mohammad Hossein Tabrizi
Mohammad Hossein Tabrizi ( fa, محمد حسین تبریزی) was a Persian calligrapher in 16th-century Safavid Iran. Tabrizi learnt calligraphy from the famous Ahmad Mashhadi. He later became a teacher of the equally renowned Mir Emad Hassani. Due to his great command in the art of calligraphy, a renowned profession in Iran, he was bestowed with the honorary title ''mihin Ustad'' ("greatest master"). His father Mirza Shokrollah Isfahani was the ''mostowfi ol-Mamalek'' ("chief accountant") under Safavid Shah Tahmasp I (1524-1576), whereas he himself was vizier to Shah Ismail I (1501-1524). After losing favour under Ismail I, he was forced to move to Mughal India, where he lived until his death. Ismail II
Ismail II (; Born Ismail Mirza; 31 May 1537 – 24 November 1577) was the third Shah of Safavid Iran from 1576 to 1577. He was the second son of Tahmasp I with his principal consort, Sultanum Begum. By the orders of Tahmasp, Ismail spent twenty years imprisoned in Qahqaheh Castle; whether for his recurrent conflicts with the realm's influential vassals, or for his growing popularity between the Qizilbash tribes, resulting in Tahmasp becoming wary of his son's influence. Tahmasp died In 1576 without a designed heir. Ismail, with the support of his sister, Pari Khan Khanum, overcame his opponents and usurped the crown. Tahmasp I
Tahmasp I ( fa, طهماسب, translit=Ṭahmāsb or ; 22 February 1514 – 14 May 1576) was the second shah of Safavid Iran from 1524 to 1576. He was the eldest son of Ismail I and his principal consort, Tajlu Khanum. Ascending the throne after the death of his father on 23 May 1524, the first years of Tahmasp's reign were marked by civil wars between the Qizilbash leaders until 1532, when he asserted his authority and began an absolute monarchy. He soon faced a long-lasting war with the Ottoman Empire, which was divided into three phases. The Ottoman sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, tried to install his own candidates on the Safavid throne. A scrivener (or scribe) was a person who could read and write or who wrote letters to court and legal documents. Scriveners were people who made their living by writing or copying written material.
