Agnete Friis (badminton)
Agnete Friis (married name Varn) is a former Danish badminton player. She became Danish Champion in the women's singles in 1941 and 1944 and nine times in women's doubles from 1941–1958. She played for the national team until the end of the 1950s. She also reached three All England Championship Finals in all three categories in 1953. In the singles final she lost to Marie Ussing; the two of them lost the doubles final to Iris Cooley and June White of Great Britain and in the mixed doubles with Poul Holm, they were defeated by Eddy Choong and June White. Marie Ussing
Marie Ussing Nylen is a Danish-American biologist, dentist, microscopist, and badminton player known for her research on the morphology of tooth enamel and her contributions to refining the electron microscope as an aide in dental research at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDR). She was the first woman director of the NIDR's Intramural Research Program. Nylen became director of the NIDR extramural research program in 1984. In 1947 and 1953, she won the women's world singles event at the All England Open Badminton Championship. Education Nylen is from Denmark. She completed a D.D.S. at the Royal Dental College, University of Copenhagen (Danish language reference) in 1947. Iris Rogers
Iris Rogers (née Cooley), is a former English badminton player. Badminton career Born Iris L Cooley she came to prominence in the early fifties when playing doubles. Partnering June Timperley née White the pair broke the stranglehold of the Danish pairs during the era of Danish domination by claiming three All England women's doubles titles. She also claimed an All England mixed doubles titles with John Best. Although mainly concentrating on doubles Rogers was also a very good singles player reaching the final of the All England in 1954 before losing out to Judy Devlin. Other successes included nine Irish open titles, nine Scottish open titles, three Dutch opens, one Swedish open and one Danish open title. She represented England and won a silver medal in the women's doubles with Angela Bairstow, at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. June Timperley
June Rose Timperley (née White) was an English badminton player. Badminton career Born June White she came to prominence in the early fifties when playing doubles. Eddy Choong
Dato' Choong Ewe Beng (29 May 1931 – 28 January 2013) was a Malaysian badminton player. He was David Choong's brother and they played men's doubles together. Early life Choong Ewe Beng, also known as Eddy, was born on May 29, 1931, and was the third son of a wealthy family in Penang. His parents were named Dato' Choong Eng Hai and Datin Ho Guat Im. Choong first went to primary and secondary school in Penang before moving to England at the turn of the 1950s to study law and medicine. His passion for the sport quickly eclipsed his studies and Eddy later said his studies were “long forgotten”. In the UK, Eddie was much attracted to the Jim Russell School of racing driving and enrolled, but parental pressure forced him to re-think his priorities. However, his passion for driving took him to other aspects of motor sports, and when back on Penang, he revelled in grass track, hill climbs and karting. The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward.
