Edward Aglionby (died 1553)
Edward Aglionby (by 1495 – 1553), of Carlisle, Cumberland, was an English politician. Biography Aglionby was the son of Thomas Aglionby of Carlisle and Joan Aglionby. Aglionby held a number of public offices, including Escheator of Cumberland and Westmorland (1527–28), gentleman usher of the chamber in 1534 and constable of Penrith Castle in 1534. He was also the Governor of Carlisle Castle from 1542 until his death, High Sheriff of Cumberland for 1544–45 and Mayor of Carlisle in 1545. Edward Aglionby (died 1599)
Edward Aglionby (died 25 December 1599) was an English politician who was murdered. Life and career He was son of John Aglionby of Carlisle and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1576. In 1592 he supplied Lord Burghley with an account of local administration and politics on both sides of England's western border with Scotland and English military preparedness in that area. He was until 1597 gunner at Carlisle Castle. He also held the office of Mayor of Carlisle. Aglionby became a retainer of Thomas Warcop (1525 - 1589). He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Carlisle in 1584 and 1593 and was Mayor of Carlisle several times. Personal life Aglionby married Elizabeth, daughter of Cuthbert Musgrave, with whom he had at least one son and one daughter. Hugh Aglionby
Hugh Aglionby (by 1521 – between 1552 and 1554), of London, was an English politician. Career Aglionby was a Member of Parliament for Carlisle in 1545. He held the office of a Comptroller of the mint from 8 March 1542 to 25 March 1544. He was a clerk of the council to Queen Catherine Parr twice, the first one by September 1544, and the second time by 8 August 1548. "He later succeeded Walter Butler as the Queen’s secretary and after her death Edward VI granted him and his wife in survivorship an annuity of £30". John Aglionby (divine)
John Aglionby (1566 – 6 February 1610) was an English clergyman and academic who was one of the translators of the King James Version of the Bible. Early life and education Aglionby was born in Carlisle in 1566, the son of Edward Aglionby and Elizabeth Musgrove, the Aglionbys were an ancient family whose name was originally De Aguilon. After attending the free school in Kendal, he went to Queen's College, Oxford where he matriculated on 13 December 1583, aged 16. He graduated B. A. on 28 June 1587, and M. A. on 1 July 1590 on which date he also became a Fellow. He would subsequently be awarded a B. D on 12 July 1597 and a D. D. on 17 June 1600. John Aglionby (bishop)
John Orfeur Aglionby (16 March 1884 – 15 May 1963) was Bishop of Accra during the second quarter of the 20th century. Educated at Westminster and The Queen's College, Oxford, Aglionby was ordained in 1911 and began his career with a curacy at Holy Trinity, South Shields. In 1915, Aglionby joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Private hurch Times obituary, 24.5.1963and, six months later, was interviewed by the Chaplain-General for a commission in the Army chaplaincy. He was noted as 'Tall, Quiet, fairly good' and, although he was strongly Anglo-Catholic in a chaplaincy preferring Evangelicals, he was appointed and posted to France. His Military Cross was gazetted on 4 June 1917. His brother, William, also an army chaplain, would be awarded a MC in January 1918.
