Agathe L. Van Beverwijk
Agathe Louise van Beverwijk (18 September 1907 – 10 July 1963) was a Dutch mycologist and botanist. She spent most of her career at the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures, where she was director from 1958 until her death in 1963. Biography Agathe Louise van Beverwijk was born in Amsterdam in 1907, and grew up in the city centre. She attended the University of Amsterdam from 1925 until 1930 and studied biology, focusing on the fields of botany, zoology and geology. After graduating, she took up a role as a biology teacher at a secondary school, and left after a few years to perform research on tissue culture at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. She was opposed to the animal experimentation that her role required, however, and so she left the position. After a year of studying English and receiving her diploma in teaching, she began teaching biology at the International Quakers' School in Ommen. Centraalbureau Voor Schimmelcultures
The ''Westerdijk Institute'', or Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute, is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The institute was renamed on 10 February 2017, after Johanna Westerdijk, the first female professor in the Netherlands and director of the institute from 1907 to 1958. The former name of the institute was CBS-KNAW Fungal Biodiversity Centre or Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (''Central Bureau of Fungal Cultures'' in English). Despite the name change the collection maintained by the institute remains the CBS collections and the use of CBS numbers for the strains continues. The institute is located in Utrecht Science Park, a suburb of Utrecht. Before it had been located between offices at the university in Delft and in Baarn. International Mycological Institute
The International Mycological Institute was a non-profit organisation, based in England, that undertook research and disseminated information on fungi, particularly plant pathogenic species causing crop diseases. It was established as the Imperial Bureau of Mycology at Kew in 1920 and amalgamated with CAB International in 1998. History The Imperial Bureau of Mycology was established in 1920 as a centre for accumulating and disseminating information on plant pathogenic fungi in the British empire and for undertaking systematic research into such fungi. It was initially based in two houses at Kew, but in 1930 moved into a purpose-built building in the grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens.
