Agapius The Historian
Agapius of Hierapolis, also called Maḥbūb ibn Qusṭanṭīn; sometimes also called ''al-Rūmī al-Manbijī'' 'the Byzantine [Roman] from Manbij' (died after 942), was a Melkite Christian historian and the bishop of Manbij. He wrote a universal history in Arabic, the lengthy ''Kitāb al-ʿunwān'' ('book of the title'). He was a contemporary of the annalist Patriarch Eutychius of Alexandria, Eutychius (Said al-Bitriq), also a Melkite. Writings His history commences with the foundation of the world and runs up to his own times. The portion dealing with the Arab period is extant only in a single manuscript and breaks off in the second year of the caliphate of al-Mahdi (160AH = 776–7 AD) and during the time when Emperor was Leo IV the Khazar, Leo IV (775–780). For the early history of Christianity, Agapius made use uncritically of apocryphal and legendary materials. The term Melkite (), also written Melchite, refers to various Eastern Christianity, Eastern Christian churches of the Byzantine Rite and their members originating in the Middle East. The term comes from the common Central Semitic Semitic root, root ''m-l-k'', meaning "royal", and by extension "imperial" or loyal to the Byzantine Emperor. Patrologia Orientalis
The ''Patrologia Orientalis'' is an attempt to create a comprehensive collection of the writings by eastern Church Fathers in Syriac, Armenian, Arabic, Coptic, Ge'ez, Georgian, and Slavonic, published with a Latin, English, Italian or mostly French translation. It is designed to complement the comprehensive, influential, and monumental Latin and Greek patrologies published in the 19th century. It began in 1897 as the ''Patrologia Syriaca'', was discontinued in its original form and replaced by the ''Patrologia Orientalis''. The collection began with those liturgical texts that touch on hagiography. Since then critical editions of the Bible, theological works, homilies and letters have been published. Georg Graf
Georg Graf (15 March 1875 – 18 September 1955) was a German Orientalist. One of the most important scholars of Christian-Arabic literature, his 5-volume ''Geschichte der christlichen arabischen Literatur'' is the foundational text in the field. Life Georg Graf was born in Münsingen, Germany, in 1875. He entered the seminary of Dillingen, where he studied Greek, Latin and Hebrew, while privately he also studied Syriac and Arabic. In 1902-1903 he completed his studies at Munich, studying ancient Egyptian, Coptic, modern Greek and later Georgian. The ''New Catholic Encyclopedia'' (NCE) is a multi-volume reference work on Roman Catholic history and belief edited by the faculty of The Catholic University of America. Louis Cheikho
Louis Cheikho, ar, لويس شيخو, born Rizqallâh Cheikho (1859–1927) was a Jesuit Chaldean Catholic priest, Orientalist and Theologian. He pioneered Eastern Christian and Assyrian Chaldean literary research and made major contributions to the publication of manuscript texts. Biography Louis Cheikho was born in Mardin, Turkey on February 5th, 1859. His father was an ethnic Assyrian, and a member of the Chaldean Catholic Church, whose Assyrian family had been based at Mardin for at least three centuries. His mother was an Armenian named Elizabeth Schamsé, who took him on pilgrimage to the Holy Land when he was 9-years old.
