Against The Grain (Snakefinger Album)
Philip Charles Lithman (17 June 1949 – 1 July 1987), who performed under the stage name Snakefinger, was an English musician, singer and songwriter. A multi-instrumentalist, he was best known for his guitar and violin work and his collaborations with The Residents. History Lithman was born in Tooting, South London, and came from the British blues scene. He moved to San Francisco in 1971 and became associated with the avant-garde group The Residents. It is said he was given the name 'Snakefinger' by The Residents themselves based on a photograph of Lithman performing, in which his finger looks like a snake about to attack his violin. In 1972 Lithman returned to England and formed the pub rock band Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers with Martin Stone, ex-member of Mighty Baby and a fellow ex-member of Junior's Blues Band. As a duo, they released the album ''Kings of Robot Rhythm''. In 1974, as a full band and popular live act in Britain, they released ''Bongos Over Ba ...

Against The Grain (Rory Gallagher Album)
''Against the Grain'' is the fifth studio album and seventh album overall by Irish musician Rory Gallagher, released in 1975. It was his first album with his new record company Chrysalis. Having previously only released one cover version on a studio album, "Against The Grain" includes two, one by Leadbelly and one from the Porter/Hayes songwriting team. The album received very favourable reviews. Background The album name and cover were a play on words. The cover shows the wood "grain" of Gallagher's famous Stratocaster guitar which was well worn from his rigorous tour schedule. At the same time the phrase reflects Gallagher's relation with the music industry, that he always went "against the grain" and played the traditional blues and folk music he loved rather than focusing on singles and more commercially accessible music. As Gallagher himself described his feelings on this a few years later: "I see music as a lifetime affair, I'm not in it for the big kill and then get out...W ...

Against The Grain (Phoebe Snow Album)
''Against the Grain'' is the fifth album by singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow, released in 1978. Overview At the time of the release of ''Against the Grain'', Phoebe Snow called it her "rockiest" album, "a deliberate turning away from the jazz influences" of her earlier recordings. Peter Reilly of ''Stereo Review'' recognized the album's intent to "mark now'sentrance into Outright Rock-&-Roll", dismissing it as "merely a paraphrase of real rock" and lamenting that "a singer whohas shown a real flair for projecting a lyric with poignancy and feeling has made such an awkward and clumsy turnabout." Rising no higher than #100 on the ''Billboard'' 200, ''Against the Grain'' became Snow's second album to seriously under-perform, ending her association with Columbia Records. Snow would have one album release in the next ten years, which was ''Rock Away'', touted as her move into "rock-&-roll". In interviews concurrent with the 1981 release of ''Rock Away'', Snow would label ''Against t ...
