Against All
''Against All'' ( cs, Proti všem) is a 1956 Czechoslovak historical drama film directed by Otakar Vávra. It is based on the novel '' Proti všem'' by Alois Jirásek. The film's budget was 25 million KČs which made it the most expensive Czech film of the time. Itis the third part of Vávra's cinematic Hussite Revolutionary Trilogy. The plot is set after Jan Žižka and concludes the entire trilogy. It takes place in 1420. The central motif of the film is the fight between the Hussites and the troops of the First anti-Hussite crusade led by the heir to the Bohemian throne, the Hungarian King and Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Luxemburg. We also follow the development of Tábor and the disputes between the moderate party of Jan Žižka and the radical Picarts of Petr Kániš. Otakar Vávra
Otakar Vávra (28 February 1911 – 15 September 2011) was a Czech film director, screenwriter and pedagogue. He was born in Hradec Králové, Austria-Hungary, now part of the Czech Republic. Biography and career Vávra attended universities in Brno and Prague, where he studied architecture. During 1929–30, while still a student, he participated in the making of a handful of documentaries and wrote movie scripts. In 1931, he produced the experimental film ''Světlo proniká tmou''. The first movie he directed was 1937's '' Panenství''. His 1938 film ''The Merry Wives'' was praised in Variety for "first-rate direction, a salty yarn and elaborate production effort", even though it had undergone certain cuts because it was considered too "ribald" by American censors. Vávra was a member of the Communist Party from 1945 to 1989. Oldřich II Of Rosenberg
Oldřich II of Rosenberg (Czech: ; 13 January 1403 – 28 April 1462) was an important Bohemian nobleman who, after the Battle of Lipany, became a recognized leader of the Catholic lords in Bohemia. Biography Oldřich II increased the power of the Rosenberg family after taking advantage of the weakening royal power during the Hussite wars. Oldřich was initially sympathetic for the Hussite movement, a position influenced by his guardian Čeněk of Wartenberg. However, after the Hussites burned down the town of Sezimovo Ústí in 1420 and founded Tábor on the very northern border of the , Oldřich became a leading ally of Emperor Sigismund and acted as a negotiator and diplomat. Sigismund appointed him governor of the Bechyně region and Prácheňsko. Oldřich II was defeated in the Battle of Tábor and in the near modern day Malý Bor, and participated in the Battle of Vyšehrad in 1420. Battle Of Vítkov Hill
The Battle of Vítkov Hill was a part of the Hussite Wars. The battle pitted the forces of Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor, against Hussite forces under command of Jan Žižka (in English, John Zizka). Vítkov Hill was located on the edge of the city of Prague and the battle occurred in a vineyard established by Sigismund's father, Charles IV. It ended with a decisive Hussite victory. Background On 1 March 1420 Pope Martin V published a papal bull in which he ordered that Sigismund and all Eastern princes had to organize a crusade against the Hussite followers of Jan Hus, John Wycliffe and other heretics. On 15 March in Wrocław, Emperor Sigismund ordered the execution of Jan Krása, a Hussite and leader of the Wrocław Uprising in 1418. Christian Of Prachatice
Christian of Prachatice ( cz, Křišťan z Prachatic) (1360–1368, Prachatice, Kingdom of Bohemia – 4 September 1439, Prague, Kingdom of Bohemia) was a medieval Bohemian astronomer, mathematician and former Catholic priest who converted to the Hussite movement. He was the author of several books about medicine and herbs, and contributed to the field of astronomy with many papers and data recordings. Biography Christian of Prachatice was born in the 1360s, perhaps 1366 or 1368. In 1386 he matriculated at Charles University, where he earned a bachelor's degree two years later and a master's degree in liberal arts in 1390. Rudolf Hrušínský
Rudolf Hrušínský (17 October 1920 – 13 April 1994) was a Czech actor. He was one of the most popular Czech actors. Many of his movies such as ''The Good Soldier Švejk'', ''The Cremator'' or '' Capricious Summer'' are considered classics of the Czech cinema. He was awarded the Legion of Honor by France and title ''National Artist'' in Czechoslovakia. Jiří Menzel once described him as "the Czech Jean Gabin."
