''Afternoon of the Bulls'' ( es, Tarde de toros) is a 1956 Spanish drama film directed by Ladislao Vajda. It was entered into the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. The film was selected as the Spanish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 29th Academy Awards. Plot In the bullring of Las Ventas, in Madrid, four parallel stories are shown in the film: the senior bullfighter Ricardo Puente breaks up with his lover Paloma; the winner of the day, Juan Carmona is barely hurt by a bull because he is haunted with the notice of a new baby; Rondeño II is afraid of the bulls and afraid of the wedding with his girlfriend Ana María; finally, an innocent amateur torero dies on the sand. Ladislao Vajda
Ladislao Vajda (born Weisz László; 18 August 1906, Budapest – 25 March 1965, Barcelona) was a Hungarian-Spanish film director who made films in Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Italy and West Germany. Biography He was born in Budapest, his father being an actor and screenwriter. Vajda started his career as film editor (even though he also worked as artistic designer and writer) for different directors, such as Billy Wilder and Henry Koster. Eventually, he undertook his first directorial effort in his native country, Hungary. Before World War II he became established in Italy, where he directed two movies: ''La zia smemorata'' (1940) and ' (1941). Finally, he moved to Spain, where he continued directing films. The first film from his Spanish period was ''Se vende un palacio'' ('' A Palace for Sale''), released in 1943. José Enrique Benito y Emeterio Ysbert Alvarruiz (3 March 1886 in Madrid – 28 November 1966 in Madrid), also known as José Isbert and/or Pepe Isbert, was a Spanish actor. Biography Early life In 1903 he worked at the Court of Accounts (Tribunal de Cuentas), but decided to give up working as a civil servant and that same year he made his stage debut at the Teatro Apolo (Madrid), Teatro Apolo in Madrid in the play ''El iluso Cañizares'', changing the spelling of his real name from Y to I. Spain has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since the conception of the award. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. This is a list of submissions to the 29th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. That year, AMPAS asked individual countries to submit their best films of the year for the inaugural Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. In previous years, the Foreign Language Oscar was not a regular award, and there were no nominees – a winner was simply announced at the Oscar ceremony. The award has since been handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. Antonio Prieto Puerto (2 February 1905 - 4 February 1965) was a Spanish actor. He was born in Aspe, province of Alicante in 1905. He made his film debut in 1953 in ''El mensaje'', then he appeared in ''Los Tarantos'' (1963) along Carmen Amaya, ''Rififi'' (1955) along Fernando Fernán-Gómez, ''El tímido'' and ''Llanto por un bandido'' (1964). His most notable role was Don Benito Rojo in Sergio Leone's film ''A Fistful of Dollars'' (1964) along with Gian Maria Volonté. He won the Premio Nacional de Interpretación de España in 1959 for his work on stage. He died in Madrid in 1965.
