Afterlight (album)
''Afterlight'' (2009) is an album by the American ambient musician Steve Roach. Production ''Afterlight'' was created in the spring of 2009 over a period of several months. Steve Roach kept the piece in continual low-volume playback during periods of repose or contemplation. Roach would then modify and refine ''Afterlight'' into the flowing soundscape released to the public. ''Afterlight'' can be considered a sequel to '' Dynamic Stillness'': its creation originated immediately upon the completion of the latter album; a quote inside the album artwork reads, "after the stillness...comes the afterlight"; and both albums feature stark landscape-themed artwork created by Michal Karcz. Steve Roach (musician)
Steve Roach (born February 16, 1955) is an American composer and performer of ambient and electronic music, whose recordings are informed by his impressions of environment, perception, flow and space. His work has been influential in the trance and new-age genres. Roach has received two Grammy Award nominations for New Age Album of the Year: His 2017 album ''Spiral Revelation'' for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards., and 2018's ''Molecules Of Motion'' for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Roach's work has also been listed on "1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die." Ambient music is a genre of music that emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. ''Destination Beyond'' is an album by the American ambient musician Steve Roach, released in 2009. Roach infuses his signature atmospheric fabric of sound with a springy, trance-like groove reminiscent of the rhythm found in ''Arc of Passion''. Concept As the title implies, ''Destination Beyond'' is a meditation on motion and the infinite point on the horizon that can never be reached. The album includes a small introspection on this theme. A soundscape is the acoustic environment as perceived by humans, in context. The term was originally coined by Michael Southworth, and popularised by R. Murray Schafer. There is a varied history of the use of soundscape depending on discipline, ranging from urban design to wildlife ecology to computer science. An important distinction is to separate soundscape from the broader acoustic environment. The acoustic environment is the combination of all the acoustic resources, natural and artificial, within a given area as modified by the environment. ''Dynamic Stillness'' is a 2-disc album by the American ambient musician Steve Roach, released in 2009. Production ''Dynamic Stillness'' is composed of pieces created in solitude over a period of three years. The resulting pieces emote the slow, powerful energies of expanding cloud formations and the silence of the sprawling land beneath. Immediately after the release of ''Dynamic Stillness'', Steve Roach commenced with a continuation of the atmospheric theme, creating the long-form piece, '' Afterlight''. Album artwork The photographs used in the artwork were created by Michal Karcz, whose imagery is nearly achromatic in nature. The six-panel digipack album opens to reveal stark imagery of perfect desolation beneath foreboding clouds. This magnificent contrast is, of course, observed in the album's title. Widescreen images are displayed within a set of aspect ratios (relationship of image width to height) used in film, television and computer screens. In film, a widescreen film is any film image with a width-to-height aspect ratio greater than the standard 1.37:1 Academy aspect ratio provided by 35 mm film. For television, the original screen ratio for broadcasts was in fullscreen 4:3 (1.33:1). Sam Rosenthal (musician)
Sam Rosenthal is an American musician, composer, artist, and novelist. He is the founder and leader of the band Black Tape for a Blue Girl and the Projekt Records record label. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his son and cat. Rosenthal was interviewed in August 2016 for an NPR piece about the DMCA. "It's a really unreasonable expectation," he says, "that I would have the time to chase (illegal downloads) all day when I should be running a business and making music." Projekt records Begun by Rosenthal in 1983 as a way to release his own solo electronic music, Projekt Records spent its first three years as a cassette-only label with a series of titles that are now long out-of-print.
