After The Deadlines
''After The Deadlines'' was an American evening news program of the early 1950s. It was broadcast on the ABC network from April 1951 to October 1952. Typical of evening television news programs of the era, it lasted fifteen minutes. ''After the Deadlines'' aired at 7:00 PM, earlier than its competitors, ''Camel News Caravan'' (NBC, 7:45 PM) and '' Douglas Edwards with the News'' (CBS, 7:30 PM) in an attempt to draw news viewers from these more-established networks. The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) is an American commercial broadcast television network. It is the flagship property of the ABC Entertainment Group division of The Walt Disney Company. The Poynter Institute for Media Studies is a non-profit journalism school and research organization in St. Petersburg, Florida, United States. The school is the owner of the ''Tampa Bay Times'' newspaper and the International Fact-Checking Network. It also operates PolitiFact. ''The Camel News Caravan'' or ''Camel Caravan of News'' was a 15-minute American television news program aired by NBC News from February 16, 1949 to October 26, 1956. Sponsored by the Camel cigarette brand and anchored by John Cameron Swayze, it was the first NBC news program to use NBC filmed news stories rather than movie newsreels. On February 16, 1954, the ''Camel News Caravan'' became the first news program broadcast in color, making use of 16mm color film. In early 1955, the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, maker of Camel cigarettes, cut back its sponsorship to three days a week. Chrysler's Plymouth division sponsored the other days, and on those days, the program was labelled the ''Plymouth News Caravan''. ''News and Views'' was an early American evening news program. Broadcast on ABC from 1948 to 1951, it was ABC's first evening news program and one of the first such programs on any television network; Both CBS and NBC also initiated their evening news programs (respectively '' CBS Television News'' and ''Camel News Caravan'', called ''Camel Newsreel Theatre'' at first) that same year, both debuting a few months before the first broadcast of ''News and Views'' on August 11, 1948. The co-anchors (not called that, as that meaning of "anchor" was not yet extant) were H. R. Baukhage and Jim Gibbons. Baukhage was a veteran radio broadcaster whose staccato baritone and gruff and abrupt sign-on, "Baukhage talking", was familiar to radio listeners of that era. Jim Gibbons was less well known. John Charles Patrick Croghan Daly (February 20, 1914 – February 24, 1991) was an American journalist, host, radio and television personality, ABC News executive, TV anchor, and game show host, best known for his work on the CBS panel game show ''What's My Line?'' Daly was the first national correspondent to report the attack on Pearl Harbor and the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. During World War II, Daly covered front-line news from Europe and North Africa. Early life The younger of two brothers, Daly was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, where his American father worked as a geologist. While in Johannesburg, Daly attended Marist Brothers College. After his father died of a tropical fever, Daly's mother moved the family to Boston, Massachusetts.
