"Afro Puffs" is the first single released by the Lady of Rage in 1994 from the Death Row labeled ''Above the Rim: The Soundtrack''. The extended, video, and instrumental version on the single samples "Superman Lover" (Intro) by Johnny "Guitar" Watson. The original song samples "Love That Will Not Die", also by Johnny "Guitar" Watson. The term that the title refers to is a hairstyle in which the hair is tied into ball-shaped masses at the top or sides of the head. The song is featured in the 2013 video game ''Grand Theft Auto V''s 2014 "enhanced edition" re-release. The song was performed live at the 1995 Source Awards, as well as at the 2008 BET Hip Hop Awards. Robin Yvette Allen (born February 6,1966), known professionally as the Lady of Rage, is an American rapper, singer and actress best known for her collaborations with several other Death Row Records artists, including Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on the seminal albums, ''The Chronic'' and ''Doggystyle''. The Lady of Rage has been described as "one of the most skillful female MCs" with a "mastery of flow" and " hard-core lyrics". Biography In the summer of 1988, the Lady of Rage met Shahkim, now known as Black Rushn of the Original Outlaw Brothers, a rap group from Queens, New York. Once Shahkim convinced the Lady of Rage that he could get her a record deal, he brought her into his group. G-funk Songs
G-funk, short for gangsta funk, is a sub-genre of gangsta rap that emerged from the West Coast scene in the late 1980s. The genre is heavily influenced by 1970s psychedelic funk (P-funk) sound of artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic. Characteristics G-funk (which uses funk with an artificially altered tempo) incorporates multi-layered and melodic synthesizers, slow hypnotic grooves, a deep bass, heavy use of the snare drum, background female vocals, the extensive sampling of P-Funk tunes, and a high-pitched portamento saw wave synthesizer lead. It is typically set at a tempo of anywhere between 80 to 100 BPM. The lyrical content depended on the artist and could consist of sex, drug use (especially marijuana), love for a city/neighborhood, love for friends and relaxing words. The 1995 Source Awards were held at the Paramount Theater in New York City on August 3, 1995. The award show was one of the most infamous events in the history of hip-hop. The show escalated tensions between the East and West Side hip-hop communities, thereby likely catalysing the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls within the following two years.
