African Society Of Human Genetics
The African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG) is a learned society and professional membership organization focused on the study of human genetics and genomics in Demographics of Africa, Africans, and open to researchers who are interested in the subject. It has played a role in founding several national genetics societies, and is affiliated with the societies of Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Egypt, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania. As the origin of ''Homo sapiens'', Africa is home to the widest array of human genetic diversity. The continent also has a high disease burden. Despite these factors, genetic research on the continent was inadequate, and no existing organization was sufficiently dedicated to the task. Holding its inaugural conference in Accra, Ghana, the Society was founded in 2003 to increase research capacity in Africa, support African researchers, and improve research of African people. Human genetics is the study of inheritance as it occurs in human beings. Human genetics encompasses a variety of overlapping fields including: classical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, genomics, population genetics, developmental genetics, clinical genetics, and genetic counseling. Genes are the common factor of the qualities of most human-inherited traits. Adebowale Adeyemo
Adebowale A. Adeyemo is a Nigerian physician-scientist and genetic epidemiologist specialized in genomics and cardiometabolic disorders. He is the deputy director and chief scientific officer of the Center for Research on Genomics and Global Health at the National Human Genome Research Institute. Education Adeyemo completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Ibadan in 1987. He graduated with a distinction in anatomy and the departmental prize in surgery. Adeyemo completed a residency in pediatrics and genetics at the University College Hospital, Ibadan from 1989 to 1994. He conducted a postdoctoral education in bioinformatics at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. Translational Research
Translational research (also called translation research, translational science, or, when the context is clear, simply translation) is research aimed at translating (converting) results in basic research into results that directly benefit humans. The term is used in science and technology, especially in biology and medical science. As such, translational research forms a subset of applied research. The term has been used most commonly in life-sciences and biotechnology but applies across the spectrum of science and humanities. Michèle Ramsay
Michèle Ramsay is a South African Professor of human genetics at the National Health Laboratory Service and the University of the Witwatersrand. Ramsay's research has investigated single-gene disorders, epigenetics, obesity and hypertension. She was the President of the African Society of Human Genetics from 2014 until 2019. Career and impact Michèle Ramsay received her PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand. Ramsay is the National Research Foundation of South Africa Research Chair on Genomics and Bioinformatics.
