African Jim
''African Jim'', also known as ''Jim Comes to Jo'burg'', is a 1949 South African film, directed by Donald Swanson and produced by Eric Rutherford. It features Daniel Adnewmah, Dolly Rathebe, The African Inkspots, Sam Maile, and Dan Twala. It is notable as the Republic of South Africa's first African feature-length film. Plot synopsis Jim (Daniel Adnewmah) leaves his tribal homeland to seek his fortune in the city of Johannesburg. As soon as he arrives, three gangsters mug him. When Jim regains consciousness, a friendly night watchman named Charlie (Dan Twala) takes care of him and helps him find a job. Donald Swanson (film Director)
Chief Inspector Donald Sutherland Swanson (12 August 1848 - 24 November 1924) was born at Geise, where his father operated a distillery, before the family moved in 1851 to Thurso, and was a senior police officer in the Metropolitan Police in London during the notorious Jack the Ripper murders of 1888. Early life The son of John Swanson, a brewer, Swanson was a good scholar and on leaving school he worked for a period as a teacher, but realising that that career offered him few prospects, he decided instead to move to London, where two of his sisters had settled after marriage, and in 1867 found work as a City clerk. When his employer decided to retire from business early the following year Swanson spotted an advertisement in ''The Daily Telegraph'' by the Metropolitan Police appealing for new applicants. Dolly Rathebe
Dolly Rathebe ( OIS) (2 April 1928 – 16 September 2004) was a South African musician and actress who performed with the Elite Swingsters jazz band, and in Alf Herbert's ''African Jazz and Variety Show''. Rathebe died on 16 September 2004 from a stroke. Music career Rathebe was born in Randfontein, South Africa but grew up in Sophiatown, which she describes as having been "a wonderful place". She was discovered around 1948 after singing at a picnic in Johannesburg. A talent scout from Gallo approached her and it was not long before she became a star. Rathebe rose to fame in 1949, aged 21, when she appeared as a nightclub singer in the British-produced movie '' Jim Comes To Jo'burg'' - the first film to portray urban Africans in a positive light.
