''Africa Screams'' is a 1949 American Adventure film, adventure comedy film directed by Charles Barton (director), Charles Barton and starring Abbott and Costello that parodies the safari#Cinema genre, safari genre. The title is a play on the title of the 1930 documentary ''Africa Speaks!'' The supporting cast features Clyde Beatty, Frank Buck (animal collector), Frank Buck, Hillary Brooke, Max Baer (boxer), Max Baer, Buddy Baer, Shemp Howard and Joe Besser. The film entered the public domain in 1977. Plot Diana Emerson visits the book section of Klopper's department store seeking a copy of ''Dark Safari'' by the famed explorer Cuddleford. She tells the clerk Buzz Johnson that she will pay $2,500 for a map that is inside the book. Buzz's friend and coworker Stanley Livington, an armchair explorer, has read the book and says that he is familiar with a map within it. Charles Barton (director)
Charles Barton (May 25, 1902December 5, 1981) was an American film and vaudeville actor and film director. He won an Oscar for best assistant director in 1933. His first film as a director was the Zane Grey feature ''Wagon Wheels'', starring Randolph Scott, in 1934. Barton worked in Hollywood B-movie units. From 1946, he was a principal director of the Abbott and Costello comedies, such as ''The Time of Their Lives'', ''Buck Privates Come Home,'' ''Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,'' and ''Africa Screams''. He later directed Walt Disney films such as '' The Shaggy Dog'' and ''Toby Tyler''. His extensive work for television included every episode of ''Amos 'n' Andy'' in the 1950s, a total of 90 episodes of '' Dennis the Menace'' in the 1960s, and 106 episodes of ''Family Affair'' from 1967 to 1971. Motion Picture Production Code
The Motion Picture Production Code was a set of industry guidelines for the self-censorship of content that was applied to most motion pictures released by major studios in the United States from 1934 to 1968. It is also popularly known as the Hays Code, after Will H. Hays, president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) from 1922 to 1945. Under Hays's leadership, the MPPDA, later the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Motion Picture Association (MPA), adopted the Production Code in 1930 and began rigidly enforcing it in 1934. Carlos Cruz Gemora (June 15, 1903 – August 19, 1961), commonly known as Charles Gemora, was a Hollywood makeup artist renowned as "the King of the Gorilla Men" for his prolific appearances in many Hollywood films while wearing a gorilla suit. Biography Gemora was born on the island of Negros, Philippines, and arrived in San Francisco as a stowaway. He quickly found work on a fruit farm in Colusa, California but later moved to Los Angeles. ''Africa Speaks!'' is a 1930 American documentary film directed by Walter Futter and narrated by Lowell Thomas. It is an exploitation film. Premise Paul L. Hoefler heads a 1928 expedition to Africa capturing wildlife and tribes on film. Production Although the film was shot over the fourteen months of the expedition in the Serengeti and in Uganda, a scene involving an attack by a lion on a native was apparently staged at the Selig Zoo in Los Angeles and involved a toothless lion. Hoefler wrote a book entitled ''Africa Speaks'' about the expedition that was published in 1931. References in popular culture The title of the film was parodied in the 1940 cartoon '' Africa Squeaks'' and the 1949 Abbott and Costello film ''Africa Screams''.
