Afemo Omilami (born December 13, 1950) is an American actor. Early life Omilami was born in Petersburg, Virginia on December 13, 1950. Afemo has not made any public reference to his paternal background, however his name has ties to the Yoruba community in Nigeria. Career He has appeared in many films such as ''Trading Places '' (1983), '' Glory'' (1989), '' The Firm'' (1993), ''Gordy'' (1995), ''Remember the Titans'' (2000), '' Ray'' (2004), '' Hounddog'' (2007), '' The Blind Side'' (2009), and ''Terminator Genisys'' (2015). He is perhaps best known for his role as the Drill Sergeant in ''Forrest Gump'' (1994). He had a recurring role as the streetwise Jimmy Dawes in ''In the Heat of the Night'' from 1989 to 1993. Petersburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,458. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines Petersburg (along with the city of Colonial Heights) with Dinwiddie County for statistical purposes. Sankofa (film)
''Sankofa'' (Amharic: ሳንኮፋ) is a 1993 Ethiopian-produced drama film directed by Haile Gerima centered on the Atlantic slave trade. The storyline features Oyafunmike Ogunlano, Kofi Ghanaba, Mutabaruka, Alexandra Duah, and Afemo Omilami. The word Sankofa derives its meaning from the Ghanaian Akan language which means to "go back, look for, and gain wisdom, power and hope," according to Dr. Anna Julia Cooper. The word Sankofa stresses the importance of one not drifting too far away from one's past in order to progress in the future. In the film, Sankofa is depicted by a bird and the chants and drumming of a Divine Drummer. Thomas Jefferson Byrd (June 25, 1950 – October 3, 2020) was an American character actor who played in several of director Spike Lee's films.
