Lucilius Junior
Lucilius Junior (fl. 1st century), was the procurator of Sicily during the reign of Nero, a friend and correspondent of Seneca, and the possible author of ''Aetna'', a poem that survives in a corrupt state. Life The information about Lucilius comes from Seneca's writings, especially his '' Moral Letters'', which are addressed to Lucilius. Seneca also dedicated his ''Naturales Quaestiones'' and his essay ''De Providentia'' to Lucilius. Lucilius seems to have been a native of Campania, and Seneca refers repeatedly to "your beloved Pompeii." At the time Seneca wrote his ''Letters'' (c. 65 AD), Lucilius was the procurator (and possibly governor) of Sicily. He was a Roman Knight, a status he had achieved through "persistent work," and he owned a country villa in Ardea, south of Rome. Seneca devotes one of his shorter letters to praising a book Lucilius had written, and elsewhere quotes a few lines of Lucilius' poetry. Aetna (Ancient Greek: Αἴτνη ''Aἴtnē'') was in Greek and Roman mythology a Sicilian nymph and, according to Alcimus, a daughter of Uranus and Gaia or of Briareus. Stephanus of Byzantium says that according to one account Aetna was a daughter of Oceanus. Simonides said that she had acted as arbitrator between Hephaestus and Demeter respecting the possession of Sicily. By Zeus or Hephaestus she became the mother of the Palici. Mount Etna in Sicily was believed to have derived its name from her and under it Zeus buried Typhon, Enceladus, or Briareus. Aetna (Ancient Greek: , ''Aítnē''), was an ancient city of Sicily, situated at the foot of the mountain of the same name, on its southern declivity. It was originally a Sicelian city, and was called Inessa or Inessum. History After the death of Hieron I and the expulsion of the colonists whom he had established at Catana (modern Catania), the latter withdrew to Inessa, a place of great natural strength, which they occupied, and transferred to it the name of Aetna, previously given by Hieron to his new colony at Catana. Mount Etna, or simply Etna ( it, Etna or ; scn, Muncibbeḍḍu or ; la, Aetna; grc, Αἴτνα and ), is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Catania, between the cities of Messina and Catania. It lies above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is one of the tallest active volcanoes in Europe, and the tallest peak in Italy south of the Alps with a current height (July 2021) of , though this varies with summit eruptions. Whiteside (formerly Aetna, Etna and Running Water) is an unincorporated community in Marion County, Tennessee. It was originally settled as a Cherokee town in the late eighteenth century. After Indian Removal, European-American settlers moved in and later named it after James Anderson Whiteside (1803–1861), attorney, Chattanooga railroad promoter and land investor.Larry Miller, Tennessee Place Names' (Indiana University Press, 2001), p. 222. Aetna, Alberta
Aetna is a hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada within Cardston County, located east of Highway 2, approximately southwest of Lethbridge. Settlement of the Aetna area began in 1888. Until 1893, the area was known as Snake Creek. In 1893 the community was named after Mount Etna by John W. Taylor, apostle for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who said a nearby hill resembled the Sicilian mountain. The Aetna Springs Resort is a historic resort located in Pope Valley in the north eastern part of Napa County, California, United States. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Etymology It was named after a nearby hot spring. The spring was so named by the owner of the Aetna Mines, John Lawley, when he discovered the spring in the 1880s. History Aetna springs was founded by Chancellor Hartson in 1877. In August 2020, Aetna Springs was evacuated due to the Hennessey Fire, which resulted in the burning of over in five counties, including in Aetna Springs. The resort and spa were originally developed by San Francisco advertising executive Len D.
