Advocate (2019 Film)
''Advocate'' is a 2019 Israeli documentary film, directed by Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaïche. The film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Festival, and went on to win top prizes at Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, Kraków Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival and Docaviv Festival. ''Advocate'' won the Emmy for Best Documentary in the 42nd News and Documentary Emmy Awards. Synopsis The film follows Jewish-Israeli human-rights lawyer Lea Tsemel as she navigates through the Israeli judicial system in defense of Palestinians accused of terrorism. Rachel Leah Jones
Rachel Leah Jones (born 1970) is an American-Israeli documentary film director and producer. Her documentary film '' Advocate'' about the controversial human rights lawyer Leah Tsemel, which she co-directed and co-produced with cinematographer Philippe Bellaïche, premiered at 2019 Sundance Film Festival, and won top prizes at Kraków Film Festival, Thessaloniki Documentary Festival and Docaviv Festival. Early life and education Jones was born in Berkeley, California and raised in Tel Aviv. Israa Jaabis
Israa Jaabis ( ar, إسراء جعابيص) is a Palestinian woman who was imprisoned in Israel from 2015 to 2023. Jaabis seriously injured herself and police officer Moshe Chen when she allegedly detonated a car bomb in 2015, according to Israeli authorities. Her family, however, claims that the fire originated from a fault in her car. According to the Israeli police, Jaabis, a 31-year-old Palestinian, planned to detonate a gas tank near a soldiers' hitchhiking station close to Ma'ale Adumim. According to the Shin Bet, officer Moshe Chen stopped Jaabis's car, at which point she yelled "Allahu Akbar" and detonated the bomb. Moshe, who sustained injuries in the attack, including burns to his face and chest, received a commendation from the police for his actions. Rotten Tomatoes is an American review-aggregation website for film and television. The company was launched in August 1998 by three undergraduate students at the University of California, Berkeley: Senh Duong, Patrick Y. Lee, and Stephen Wang. Although the name "Rotten Tomatoes" connects to the practice of audiences throwing rotten tomatoes in disapproval of a poor stage performance, the original inspiration comes from a scene featuring tomatoes in the Canadian film ''Léolo'' (1992). Human Rights Watch Film Festival is an annual film festival held by Human Rights Watch organization in more than 20 countries which previews human rights films and videos in commercial and archival theaters and on public and cable television. RTS 1 (french: RTS Un) is a Swiss public television channel owned by RTS Radio Télévision Suisse, the public broadcaster for the Romand people.
