Adriaen Van Nieulandt
Adriaen van Nieulandt (1587, Antwerp- buried July 7, 1658, Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and engraver of the Baroque period. Biography His father (Adriaen van Nieulandt the elder) was born to a family of artists of Flemish origin from Antwerp. In 1589 he moved his family to Amsterdam, probably to flee the Fall of Antwerp. This could have been because they were Protestants or simply for economic reasons, as the art market in the Northern Netherlands was doing very well at the time. His sons Adriaen Jr., Willem van Nieulandt II and Jacob van Nieulandt all became painters. Adriaen Jr. was a pupil of Pieter Isaacsz (1569–1625) and Frans Badens (1571–1618) in Amsterdam. According to Houbraken, he specialized in painting statuary and landscapes. ''Het Gulden Cabinet vande Edel Vry Schilder-Const'' or ''The Golden Cabinet of the Noble Liberal Art of Painting'' is a book by the 17th-century Flemish notary and ''Chamber of rhetoric, rederijker'' Cornelis de Bie published in Antwerp. Written in the Dutch language, it contains artist biographies and panegyrics with engraved portraits of 16th- and 17th-century artists, predominantly from the Habsburg Netherlands. The work is a very important source of information on the artists it describes. It formed the principal source of information for later art historians such as Arnold Houbraken and Jacob Campo Weyerman. It was published in 1662, although the work also mentions 1661 as date of publication. Background ''Het Gulden Cabinet'' stands in a long tradition of artist biographies. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum (HAUM) is an art museum in the German city of Braunschweig, Lower Saxony. History Founded in 1754, the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum is one of the oldest museums in Europe. The museum has its origins in the art and natural history cabinet of Duke Charles I of Brunswick, which he opened in 1754 at the suggestion of the Dutch physician Daniel de Superville. It was one of the first museums in Germany to open to the public and was opened only one year after the British Museum in London. This "cabinet" included a collection of handicraft works and sculptures from the Baroque and Renaissance, but also ancient works of art from outside Europe. The Frans Hals Museum is a museum located in Haarlem, the Netherlands. The museum was established in 1862. In 1950, the museum was split in two locations when the collection of modern art was moved to the '' Museum De Hallen'' (since 2018 called ''Hal)''.
