Adolphe Merkle (* 5 October 1924Guido BielmannZum Gedenken. In: pfarrei-duedingen.ch 12 March 2012 (pdf-file, p. 13–14; 3,0 MB, in German). in Düdingen, Canton of Fribourg; † 22 February 2012 in Fribourg) was a Swiss people, Swiss entrepreneur and Patronage, patron of the sciences. Career Merkle completed his degree in economics in 1948 at the University of Fribourg and obtained his Ph.D. in 1950 under the supervision of Josef Schwarzfischer. At the age of 27 he went into the real estate business and discovered the company VibroMeter in Villars-sur-Glâne, which developed and fabricated measuring instruments. He became the sole shareholder and CEO of the company, that from the 1960s on manufactured with great success specialized instruments for the automobile and aviation industries and in 1990 for the heavy-lift launch vehicle, heavy-lift rocket Ariane 5. In 1991 Merkle sold the majority of his share to Elektrowatt and retired from the company's management in 1998 ...

The Adolphe Merkle Institute (AMI) is a research center in Fribourg, Switzerland focused on nanoscience. The institute is named after the Swiss entrepreneur Adolphe Merkle who created the foundation that partially funded the institute. History Dr. Adolphe Merkle, an entrepreneur from Fribourg, established the Adolphe Merkle Foundation in 2007 with the goal of strengthening research and teaching at the University of Fribourg. His contribution of 100 million Swiss francs constitutes one of the most important private donations to support academic research in Switzerland. In 2008, the Adolphe Merkle Institute was founded under its first director, Prof. Peter Schurtenberger, formerly a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Fribourg and then appointed as the chair of Experimental Physics and Nanoscience at the Institute.
