Administration Building Forecourt
The Administration Building Forecourt is a heritage-listed garden and memorial precinct at Morea Close, West Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australia. It was added to the Australian Commonwealth Heritage List on 22 June 2004. Description The formal front garden area to the Administration Building comprises a grassed square with a row of palms and includes an anchor and three memorials enclosed with white concrete bollards, a white chain and flagpole. The group of memorials depict various events associated with the history and strategic location of the islands: the anchor is from the Port Refuge, salvaged 1981; one plaque commemorates the action between the ''Sydney'' and the ''Emden ''in the Battle of Cocos, another commemorates Flying Officer Tom Henniken, 10 Squadron RAAF, aboard Orion A9-754, ditched 25/4/91. West Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands
West Island (Malay language, Malay: Pulau Panjang, Cocos Malay: Pulu Panjang), part of the South Keeling Islands, is the capital of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an States and territories of Australia, Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean. The population is roughly 120, making it List of national capitals by population, the third smallest capital in the world, and consists mainly of Europeans. HMAS Sydney (1912)
HMAS ''Sydney'' was a ''Chatham''-class light cruiser of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Laid down in 1911 and launched in 1912, the cruiser was commissioned into the RAN in 1913. During the early stages of World War I, ''Sydney'' was involved in supporting the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, and escorting the first ANZAC convoy. On 9 November 1914, she defeated the German cruiser at the Battle of Cocos. During 1915 and 1916, ''Sydney'' operated on the North America and West Indies Station, before joining the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron at Greenock, Scotland in November 1916. SMS Emden
SMS ''Emden'' ("His Majesty's Ship ''Emden''") was the second and final member of the of light cruisers built for the Imperial German Navy (''Kaiserliche Marine''). Named for the town of Emden, she was laid down at the ''Kaiserliche Werft'' (Imperial Dockyard) in Danzig in 1906. The hull was launched in May 1908, and completed in July 1909. She had one sister ship, . Like the preceding cruisers, ''Emden'' was armed with ten guns and two torpedo tubes. ''Emden'' spent the majority of her career overseas in the German East Asia Squadron, based in Tsingtao, in the Kiautschou Bay concession in China. In 1913, Karl von Müller took command of the ship. The Battle of Cocos was a single-ship action that occurred on 9 November 1914, after the Australian light cruiser , under the command of John Glossop, responded to an attack on a communications station at Direction Island by the German light cruiser , commanded by Karl von Müller.
